Advertising and consent

Eligible reading and discovery pages are configured to use Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google and the ad technology partners identified in Google’s consent message, may place or read browser cookies or use web beacons, IP addresses and other identifiers as a result of ad serving. Google’s advertising cookies can enable Google and its partners to select ads based on prior visits to this site or other sites. Visitors can manage personalized advertising in Google Ads Settings. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google’s certified consent platform presents advertising choices where required. Its advertising choice is separate from the Site analytics setting below. Our privacy, search and site-information pages do not load the AdSense tag.

Site analytics and your settings

Next Trip Notes serves static pages without reader accounts or public comments. A small feedback and correction form appears at the end of guide pages; it needs no account or email. Google Analytics 4 and Mixpanel measure visits and planning actions. In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, or when your country cannot be determined, analytics stays off until you turn it on in the analytics notice. Elsewhere it runs automatically. You can turn analytics off or on using Analytics settings at the foot of any page without affecting reading or search. A previously saved rejection, Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control keeps analytics off.

What analytics measures

When analytics is on, we record the language and page type, a broad referral-source category (such as Google or ChatGPT), an approximate device category (mobile, tablet or desktop), the note identifier, the page title, the referring page without its query, campaign tags such as utm_source in the page address, time with the page active, how far you scroll through a note (25, 50, 75 and 90 percent), selected navigation and planning-link clicks with the identifier of a clicked affiliate link, and whether a search returned results. We also count a visit to the end of a note after at least 30 seconds with the page active. This does not establish that you read or understood it. We do not record screens, free-text form contents, search words, page text, other URL query values or booking confirmations. Search runs in your browser using an index downloaded from this site.

Browser storage and turning analytics off

An explicit on or off choice is saved in this browser. This tab’s session storage also keeps whether an analytics notice is needed for your region. While analytics is on, it keeps a random identifier for the visit and its first referral-source category, and Google Analytics sets its first-party cookies (_ga), which can last up to two years so returning visits can be counted. Mixpanel does not save a persistent visitor identifier. Rejecting analytics stops future collection and removes these analytics identifiers and cookies from this browser. Events already sent are not erased by changing this choice. Clearing browser storage resets the saved choice to the default for your region: off until you turn it on in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, and on elsewhere unless a browser privacy signal prevents it.

Hosting and analytics providers

Ordinary page and search-index requests reach Cloudflare, our hosting provider, with an IP address and browser information. Cloudflare’s country lookup tells the page only whether an analytics notice is needed; we do not store the country. On eligible content pages, Google receives AdSense requests and handles advertising data according to the visitor’s location and choices. While site analytics is on, Google Analytics and Mixpanel receive requests with connection information such as an IP address. Google Analytics also receives standard browser and device information. Our Mixpanel setup disables IP-based geolocation, and our Google Analytics setup disables advertising features and Google signals. Each provider handles service data under its own policies.

Links to other sites

External booking and source links lead to separately operated services with their own privacy practices. A recorded link click does not tell us whether a booking was made. We do not send names, email addresses or reader account IDs through our site analytics, and we do not use our analytics event stream to choose ads.

Feedback and correction reports

A usefulness vote records the note, language, vote and an optional reason. A correction report records the note, correction type, description and an optional HTTPS source link. An automated cleanup removes reports older than 90 days when the feedback service receives new submissions; correction reports may also be copied to our private GitHub issue tracker and remain there until resolved. Free-text feedback is not sent to Google Analytics or Mixpanel. Please do not include private information.

Trip planner and saved plans

The Fukuoka and Seoul trip planners store sightseeing dates, day counts, selected days, stop choices, pace, admission preference, rainy-day alternatives, adult counts and child ages in this browser. It does not upload your plan to an account. Clear saved plan removes this planner’s saved choices; your next change creates a new saved plan. Copied itineraries contain your dates and selected stops, so check them before sharing. Data saved by the previous travel calendar is kept separately until you clear this site’s browser data.

Planner analytics and optional feedback

When site analytics is on, we count planner views, date/day-count interactions, day views, stop changes, copy outcomes and errors alongside usual page and link events. We do not send sightseeing dates, stop choices, group sizes, child ages, saved preferences or copied itinerary text. Optional fixed-choice feedback works with analytics off and sends the answer, reason, language, planner city and planner version. A random submission ID prevents duplicate delivery; a salted, daily IP-derived key limits abuse. Feedback is separate from analytics and earlier calendar responses. Records older than 90 days are removed when new submissions trigger cleanup.

Maps and directions

The planner loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap. Those requests include connection information such as your IP address, browser information and our site origin; we do not send your sightseeing date or saved plan to the map service. Map pins are approximate place locations. Opening a Google Maps route or a booking link takes you to that provider under its own privacy policy.
