For a car-free day in Wonju, choose Sogeumsan Grand Valley or the old downtown around Gangwon Gamyeong and the markets as the main event. The west-side sights can be linked by Wonju’s circular city-tour bus, but the city changed that route on 3 February 2026. Build the day from the current notice or a live route, not from an old screenshot, bus number or fare.

Choose Sogeumsan when the bridges are the reason to go

The official Sogeumsan page lists the cable car, the 200 m suspension bridge, the cliff walk and Sky Tower, the 404 m Ulleong Bridge, and a 700 m deck path as connected facilities. It also lists a weekly Monday closure, shifting to the next weekday when Monday is a public holiday. That is enough moving parts to reserve a substantial block for the attraction.

Buy the product that matches your route on the current official ticket page. Do not copy an old adult fare into the plan: the available course, discount and operating window can change. Check weather and closure notices before leaving Seoul, and use footwear suitable for long ramps, bridges and steps.

A completed 21 March 2025 trip by Neorang Narang Travel Road used KTX to Seowonju, a local bus, the cable car and the linked bridge route. It is useful evidence that the sequence can work. Its bus number, fare and journey time are historical observations, not a 2026 timetable.

Choose downtown for a shorter, flexible day

Gangwon Gamyeong was the provincial governor’s office for 500 years; the official city guide identifies the surviving and restored complex in central Wonju. From there, Central Market, Freedom Market and Doraemi Market form a compact food-and-shopping area. A 13 January 2025 visit by Daejang Oegyein found Central and Freedom markets directly connected and used the market maps to move through the upper-floor shops and food areas.

Wonju introduced a QR traditional-market tour pass in March 2026 for visitors arriving from participating attractions or the city-tour bus. The city says the offer can end early when its budget is exhausted, so treat it as a possible bonus rather than money already saved.

How to use the city-tour bus safely

The city maintains a current circular city-tour page and a separate 2026 route-change notice. Open both on the travel date and work backwards from the return train. Do not assume that a stop shown on an older video is still served at the same time.

A completed June 2024 day by Haneunggaengi used the circular bus for Central Market, Sogeumsan, Museum SAN and Gangwon Gamyeong. It shows the value of the loop for a car-free visitor, but it was a busy multi-stop day under an older route. For a reliable 2026 plan, choose one anchor and add a second stop only when the live timetable leaves a clear return buffer.

The practical answer is simple: choose Sogeumsan for the bridge-and-cliff route; choose downtown for history, food and easy changes. Confirm the current transport after choosing, rather than choosing attractions around a stale timetable.
