A ryokan with your parents: one room or two for three adults?

Start with where each person will sleep

For two parents and their adult child, a shared room is worth considering if everyone agrees on the sleeping arrangement; look at two rooms if separate sleep times and privacy matter more. Decide who needs a raised bed before choosing by floor area.

At Bokai in Beppu, the R2 Japanese-Western room has two semi-double beds, a semi-open-air bath and 65 square metres of space; its maximum occupancy is six. That is not six beds. The hotel’s FAQ says to ask staff when a futon is needed in a Japanese-Western room. It does not establish that a third adult’s futon is automatically included in a particular rate.

Use the official R2 room photographs to frame a specific request: two beds for the parents, a separate futon for the adult child, its position and any charge. Also ask whether a door separates the sleeping areas. A large room alone does not answer the privacy question.

Search for two adults in one room and one in the other

Hinoharu Ryokan in Yufuin shows why each room category deserves a separate check. Its indoor-bath and private open-air-bath categories each list occupancy of 2–4; the eight-tatami Kutsurogi room, which has no bath, lists 1–3. Ask about a bath-equipped room for the parents and a Kutsurogi room for their adult child. The listed capacities do not establish availability for both rooms on your dates.

These are Japanese-style rooms, not a confirmed pair of raised beds for the parents. The official English descriptions place the no-bath room on the second floor and the private open-air-bath room on the first floor. If the parents need raised beds, settle that requirement before considering this combination.

Check Hinoharu’s official room categories, then search the exact 2+1 occupancy split. Ask whether a one-person plan is sold for your dates and whether the rooms can be near each other. A listed capacity tells you which arrangement to investigate; the dated offer tells you what you can book.

Separate the bath decision from the bedroom decision

Bokai has no separate private-use bath; that does not remove the private bath supplied with a room such as R2. At Hinoharu, staying guests may use the private-use baths free of charge when vacant, without reservations. Decide whether taking turns in an available private-use bath meets your needs or whether you want the bath attached to your own room.

Plan the shared meal when you request the two rooms. Hinoharu says the dining setting depends on room category and party size. Ask to eat together and request confirmation of the same meal plan and seating for all three adults.

Check the route inside the building as carefully as the room. Bokai’s FAQ says it has no fully barrier-free rooms. Hinoharu describes a ramp and fewer steps between reception and first-floor rooms, but says wheelchairs cannot be used inside guest rooms. Ask about the bed or futon height, bath threshold and steps to the dining area for the exact rooms being offered.

Compare the complete stay for three people

Request one total for a shared room and another for both rooms together, using the same dates, three adults, meals and cancellation conditions. Include bedding charges, taxes and any amount payable at the property. No matched live quotes are used here, so neither arrangement is presented as cheaper.

Hinoharu’s room page and FAQ currently show different bathing-tax amounts. Ask the property or booking provider for the final all-in total rather than using either amount from this guide.

If you have not chosen the onsen town, continue with Yufuin or Kurokawa without a car.
