Seoul to Gyeongju by KTX: day trip with the night view, or one night?

Somewhere in the photos you have saved for Gyeongju there is almost always Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond: a lit pavilion mirrored in black water. Look at that photo long enough and you start searching for a room. Surely the night view means staying the night.

Put it next to the October timetable and the sums change. The lights at Donggung and Wolji come on at sunset, and in mid-October the sun sets in Gyeongju at about 17:49. You can stay until the pond is fully dark and still catch the 20:13 KTX, which reaches Seoul Station at 22:21.

So this is what I would suggest. From September to March, if the old town and Donggung at night are what you came for, a day trip is enough. In those months, what decides the overnight is Bulguksa and Seokguram, not the lights. From April to August the sun sets late, and a day trip that includes the night view gets you back to Seoul at 23:44. In those months I would book the night.

Sunset, not the last train, sets the limit

The floodlights at Donggung and Wolji, Cheomseongdae and Woljeonggyo Bridge all run from sunset until 22:00. So whether a day trip can include the night view depends less on the last train than on when the sun goes down.

I worked it out for the 15th of each month. The rules: you are at the pond by sunset, and you stay until 15 minutes after the sky goes fully dark (the end of civil twilight). From the pond gate to the platform at Gyeongju Station I allowed 40 minutes, to cover waiting for a taxi, the ride and the walk through the station. The train is the first KTX to Seoul Station after that, on the weekday timetable for October 2026.

Sunset times are calculated for the pond’s coordinates. For September and November to March, the trains assume the October timetable still applies.

From November to January you can take the 19:07 and be at Seoul Station at 21:24. Mid-January is tight even on these numbers, with 13 minutes to spare. Leave the pond a little early, or book the 20:13 instead.

April to August is different. With sunset after 19:00, the 21:35 is the first train you can make, and it reaches Seoul Station at 23:44. If you are staying in Gangnam, there is also a 21:49 to Suseo, arriving at 23:39 (Wednesday 14 October). Come down on a train around 07:00 and that is a sixteen-hour day. In those months, either do a day trip without the night view, or stay the night if the night view is the point.

On a day trip, arrive before 10:00 and finish at Donggung

Gyeongju Station, where the KTX stops, is about 7 km from the town centre in a straight line. Buses 50, 51 and 70 take about 30 minutes. How to get from the station into town, and how to book, is covered in our guide to KTX fares and booking for Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju.

To be in town by late morning, take a train that reaches Gyeongju before 10:00. On Wednesday 14 October the 07:50 from Seoul Station arrives at 09:50. If you can move earlier, the 05:13 arrives at 07:15, and on that day it was 20% off at ₩35,400.

By day, string together what you can walk. From Hwangnidan-gil to Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyerim and Woljeonggyo, each leg is a 3- to 7-minute walk. Cheomseongdae and Woljeonggyo are free. See them in daylight, then move to Donggung and Wolji before the sun goes down. From Woljeonggyo it is 1 km, a 15-minute walk.

Donggung and Wolji costs ₩3,000 for adults, and ticket sales and entry close at 21:30 (as of 7 October 2026). On a day trip you will never get near that cutoff. Your limit is the train.

Leave by taxi. Donggung and Wolji is about 12 km from Gyeongju Station by road, 13 minutes without traffic. Ahead of the taxi fare rise in February 2026, the city expected a ride from the station to Hwangnidan-gil to cost about ₩20,000. Bus 711 does pass Donggung and Wolji on its way to the station, but it leaves the station only 10 times a day. It is not something to rely on with a train to catch.

The 40 minutes are there because of the taxi. When someone asked on Reddit in March 2025 whether Gyeongju worked as a day trip, one user replied that taxis are easy to get most of the time but a nightmare in the evening rush. Several of them requested rides on Uber and Kakao T for 20 minutes, every driver turned them down, and they ended up walking. In autumn and winter you leave the pond around 18:00, right in that evening window. Start requesting a car a little before you walk out.

In the same thread another user said they went around 7:30, came back around 22:00, and urged staying into the night to see Gyeongju lit up. It was far more beautiful than by day, they wrote.

Book both directions together. When we checked trains for Wednesday 14 and Saturday 17 October on 7 October, seats were going first on trains around 18:00. On Saturday the 18:25 from Gyeongju to Seoul had no standard seats left, only tickets mixing standing and seated sections, and the 18:53 was taking waitlist requests only. On Wednesday the 18:39 and 19:26 from Gyeongju to Suseo were sold out. That same Wednesday morning, the 08:57 and 09:33 from Seoul to Gyeongju were full while the 07:50 still had seats. The 20:13, the train you take after the lights, had standard seats on both days. The two trains leaving after 22:00 were discounted, by 20–25% on the Wednesday and 15–20% on the Saturday.

If Korail’s site will not take your card, you can search Seoul–Gyeongju trains on Klook and pay in your own currency. It lists the same trains by date. Klook charges its own refund fees: ₩400 a ticket up to two days before, then 5%, 10% and 20% as departure gets closer. Keep the return on Korail if you might still change it.

What needs a night is Bulguksa and Seokguram

Bulguksa is 30 to 42 minutes from town by bus, and seeing both it and Seokguram by bus takes you out of town for 4 hours 35 minutes to 5 hours. Add the old town and the night view, and it does not fit in one day. If you want Seokguram, you need the night.

Bulguksa alone fits a day in October, on paper. Take the 07:50 KTX, arrive at 09:50, and bus 711 leaving the station at 10:21 reaches the Bulguk Station rotary at 11:20. See the temple, ride bus 10 or 11 back to town, and you still have the afternoon, then Donggung at dusk and the 20:13. But if any link slips, the night view is what gets cut, and the 711 timetable dates from 2023. If I could not spare a night and Bulguksa was a must, I would book the 20:13 home first and leave Seokguram for another trip.

With a night, the order is simple. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the old town and stay for the lights. Go to Bulguksa and Seokguram the next morning. Bus 711 takes about an hour from the station to the Bulguk rotary, so allow that much from the temple to your train.

A traveler on Reddit in February 2026 moved through Gyeongju in much the same order. They came by intercity bus from Busan, saw Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Woljeonggyo and Gyochon Village at dusk and into the evening, walked back down Hwangnidan-gil to their hotel, took a city bus to Bulguksa the next morning, and wrote that by 1 pm they were back in Busan. They still left Gyochon by day and the National Museum for another trip. A single night will not fit everything either. It gives you room to choose what to leave out.

Stay within walking distance of Hwangnidan-gil, so you can walk back after the lights. The Trip.com list of hotels near Hwangnidan-gil shows each one’s distance from the street. On 7 October, for one night on Wednesday 14 October for two adults, SILLA LEGACY HOTEL at 0.81 km started at US$49, and hanok stays at US$82 to US$110. The same list mixes in hotels more than 6.8 km away, such as the Hilton and the Commodore, which do not suit a car-free night built around the lights.

If you stay, start the evening at Donggung

Gyeongju City’s night walking route starts at Hwangnidan-gil at dusk, passes Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyerim, Woljeonggyo and Donggung and Wolji, and ends at the Jungang Market night market, 2.7 km further on. If you are staying the night, I would reverse the order as far as Donggung.

There are two reasons. The pond is at its best just after sunset, while the sky still holds some blue. But the official route has nearly 40 minutes of walking before Donggung, so if you set off from Hwangnidan-gil at dusk, the sky is already dark by the time you reach the pond. And on this route, Donggung and Daereungwon stop selling tickets at 21:30, while Cheomseongdae and Woljeonggyo are free. See Donggung first and you reach Daereungwon about an hour later, well inside that cutoff.

Go into Donggung and Wolji before sunset and stay until the sky is fully dark. Walk 1 km, about 15 minutes, to Woljeonggyo. You can walk across the bridge until 22:00. From Woljeonggyo it is 5 minutes to Gyerim, 3 minutes on to Cheomseongdae and 7 minutes to Daereungwon’s main gate. Cut through Daereungwon to the back gate and Hwangnidan-gil is another 7 minutes, with your bed at the end of it. Leave Donggung for last and you have more than 2 km to walk back.

Cheomseongdae is open until 22:00, but closes at 21:00 in winter. In winter the sun sets around 17:00 to 17:30, so even starting at Donggung you reach Cheomseongdae well before that. From Friday to Sunday the city also lists a night market at Jungang Market, in information last updated in December 2023.

Which one, in short

From September to March, for the old town and the night view only, go for the day. Arrive before 10:00, book the 20:13 or 19:07 home first, and call a taxi from Donggung.

If you add Bulguksa and Seokguram, or travel from April to August, stay the night. The old town and the lights on day one, Bulguksa the next morning.

Either way, the pond lights up when the sun goes down. What changes is what comes next: calling a taxi as you leave the pond, or walking back to your room past a lit bridge and Cheomseongdae.
