Seoul to Gyeongju by KTX: day trip or one night?

Keep a day trip in central Gyeongju

Choose a day trip if the central historic area is your priority. Stay one night if Bulguksa Temple matters just as much: giving the temple its own daytime block is simpler than squeezing it into the city-centre route. This is an editorial planning choice, not a rule that every Gyeongju visit needs a hotel.

Gyeongju City uses 2 hours 10 minutes as the representative KTX journey time between Seoul and Gyeongju. That makes about 4 hours 20 minutes on trains for a return trip before you add local transport and a sensible departure buffer.

Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Donggung and Wolji sit within a compact historic area spanning a 2 km radius in the city’s tourism guide. The distance does not include time inside each site, but it is a useful reason to treat those sights and nearby Hwangnidan-gil as one cluster. Pick the two or three places that matter most; let the confirmed return train decide whether the last stop stays.

Start with the transfer from Gyeongju Station

The official Hwangnidan-gil map lists buses 50, 51, 60, 61, 70, 710 and 711 from Gyeongju Station (경주역). Get off at Seorabeol Intersection/Hwangnidan-gil (서라벌사거리·황리단길); the map shows an 8-minute walk from there. Bus 711 runs from the station through Hwangnidan-gil and Donggung and Wolji towards Bulguksa Temple.

Published routes do not guarantee live arrival times or a seat on your travel date. Check Gyeongju’s bus information as you leave the station. If the connection is running late, keep the central cluster and remove Bulguksa rather than chasing both.

Give Bulguksa the second morning

As checked on September 7, 2026, Bulguksa Temple (불국사) admits visitors from 09:00 to 18:00 in March–September, and cultural-heritage admission is free. Recheck the temple’s official page for temporary restrictions or events.

Gyeongju City says buses 10 and 11 cover the same city–Bulguksa circuit in opposite directions. It gives about 35–45 minutes from the intercity/express bus terminals to the temple and notes that traffic changes the journey time. A clean overnight split is central Gyeongju on day one, Bulguksa on the second morning, then the confirmed train home.

To include Bulguksa on a day trip, plan backwards: arrive before temple admission closes → return to central Gyeongju → reach Gyeongju Station. If the actual train and bus times make one link uncomfortable, save the temple for another visit.

Confirm the return KTX before adding stops
