Marine World and Uminonakamichi Seaside Park with kids: ferry or JR, and what fits in one day

On a map they look like one place. Marine World Uminonakamichi, the aquarium, and Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, a national park, sit side by side on the same sandbar. So a family day out grows quickly: the dolphin show in the morning, the park’s playgrounds and capybaras in the afternoon, and a boat across the bay to finish.

Line the timetables up and three things get in the way. On weekdays, only four boats a day go back to Hakata Port, and the last leaves at 16:35. The park runs about 6 km from east to west, so the Animal Forest, where the capybaras live, is more than 20 minutes’ walk from the aquarium. And the dolphin show times differ between weekdays and weekends.

Here is what I would do. Take the boat there and step off at the pier in front of the aquarium, then come home by JR from Uminonakamichi Station. The pier is a one-minute walk from the aquarium. The station is right outside a park gate. In the morning the boat puts you at the aquarium door; in the afternoon the train means nobody is watching the clock for the last boat. Keep the park to the play area next to the aquarium, and save the Animal Forest for another day.

The boat to Uminonakamichi is the Uminaka Line, run by Yasuda Sangyo Kisen. It leaves from two piers, Bayside Place at Hakata Port and Momochi (Marizon) below Fukuoka Tower, and takes about 20 minutes. From the Uminonakamichi pier it is a one-minute walk to Marine World and five minutes to the seaside park.

By JR, take the Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii and change there to the Kashii Line. A search for the morning of Tuesday 13 October 2026 gives 34–45 minutes from Hakata to Uminonakamichi Station, for ¥560 an adult and ¥280 a child. The park’s Uminonakamichi Station gate is right outside the station, and Marine World is about a five-minute walk.

Which is easier depends on where you are staying.

If you are staying in Tenjin or Momochi, the boat is the natural way in. From Tenjin the train means three rides and two changes. Near Hakata Station the train is perfectly easy, and the boat becomes less a way to get there than the day’s first treat.

A family who reviewed the trip on Klook at the end of July 2026 strongly recommended taking the boat from the pier below Fukuoka Tower straight to the Uminonakamichi pier, because it saved the energy that transfers eat up.

The last weekday boat back to Hakata Port leaves at 16:35

The boats run on two timetables. In October and November 2026, timetable A applies on weekdays and timetable B on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (12 October, 3 November and 23 November).

Every boat arrives about 20 minutes later. These are the October–November timetables as checked on 7 October 2026. From December, look at the operator’s new calendar.

Mornings are easy. On a weekday the 10:05 from Bayside Place lands at 10:25. From Momochi, the weekday 9:05 boat arrives at 9:25, just as the aquarium opens at 9:30.

The trouble is the way back. The last weekday boat to Hakata Port leaves at 16:35. Marine World stays open until 17:30, so catching that boat means leaving an hour before closing. Miss it and there is no other boat to Hakata Port that day. The last boat to Momochi, at 17:35, leaves a little more room.

The train takes care of this. For Tuesday 13 October, the route search shows trains towards Hakata from Uminonakamichi at 16:32, 16:54, 17:09 and 17:31, taking 36–51 minutes to Hakata. You can walk to the station whenever the children run out of steam.

The boat costs ¥1,300 one way for an adult and ¥650 for a child. One preschool child per adult rides free; a second preschooler pays the elementary fare. There are no return tickets. So going one way by boat wastes nothing.

Set your arrival time by the shows

The aquarium day is easiest to build around the dolphin and sea lion show. These are the October 2026 times.

The seal performance happens once a day, at 10:40. A traveler who visited on 13 August 2026 wrote that they just made it in time for that single showing. Off the 10:05 weekday boat at 10:25, the seals are a squeeze, but the 11:00 dolphin show is comfortable.

31 October is different: the aquarium stays open until 21:00, with an extra dolphin show at 19:00. On other October days it closes at 17:30.

Expect to get wet in the front rows. The aquarium itself warns about splashing there. A family who posted in early August 2026 after taking the boat from Momochi sat in the very front row, got soaked through and suggested bringing a raincoat. Pack a change of clothes for the children, or sit a few rows back.

On a weekday, a day like this runs without strain.

At weekends there are also shows at 12:30 and 14:00, which makes lunch easier to move around. Boats to Hakata Port also run until 17:35, so at the weekend going both ways by boat fits too.

Keep the park to the play area

The seaside park runs about 6 km east to west and covers about 350 hectares. Being next to the aquarium does not make all of it close. Using the walking times on the park’s own map:

• Marine World to the Wonder World gate: 9 minutes.
• Wonder World to the Children’s Plaza (こどもの広場): 5 minutes. The Chibikko Plaza (ちびっこ広場), with pirate-ship and whale-shaped climbing frames, swings and slides for ages 3–12, is also near the Wonder World gate.
• Children’s Plaza to the Animal Forest main gate: 9 minutes more. From the aquarium that is about 23 minutes on foot, one way.

The Animal Forest has about 50 species, including kangaroos, capybaras and squirrel monkeys, and entry is included in park admission. But its nearest park entrance is the West Gate, at the far end. The Flower Hill, where cosmos bloom in October, is on the west side too. The park bus runs only on set days; as of 7 October, the dates left in 2026 are 11, 12, 18 and 25 October.

So on an aquarium day, make the play area around Wonder World your park plan. If your children like rides, add Wonder World’s mini SL train (¥350 a person) or a go-kart (¥600 single seat). Only riders 130 cm or taller can drive a go-kart themselves.

If you really want the Animal Forest, hire bicycles. From September to November, three hours cost ¥600 for adults and ¥400 for junior high age and under, and a child in a child seat rides free. Bikes go out until an hour before the park closes and must be back 30 minutes before. Holding a guinea pig on your lap is possible from 13:10 to 15:05, with numbered tickets put out at the petting house entrance when the park opens. Add that and the day with the aquarium becomes a scramble. The Animal Forest deserves a day of its own.

Weather and tired children are good reasons to drop the park too. The traveler mentioned above who caught the seal show visited on 13 August 2026, found it far too hot, gave up on the park after the aquarium and went to Tenjin instead. If the aquarium is the heart of the day and the park is what you do with leftover energy, folding early like that does not waste the day.

A few things to know before you go:

• Park admission is ¥450 for adults and free for junior high age and under. The gates take cash only.
• The park closes at 17:30 until 31 October and at 17:00 from November, with last entry an hour before closing.
• From 10 November to 30 December the park is closed every Tuesday (the next weekday if the Tuesday is a holiday). There are no Tuesday closures in October.
• The park lends 50 strollers free at its gates, but they are meant for babies from 2 months (7 months for the sitting type) up to 1 year, and they cannot be reserved. The aquarium also lends strollers free against a ¥500 deposit, but has only a few. With a two- or three-year-old and this much walking, bring your own.

What the tickets cost a family of four

We compared a day for two adults and two elementary school children, with the adults also entering the park. Prices are as checked on 7 October 2026, starting from Hakata Station, and leave out the bus to the pier.

The JR set ticket is the cheapest. It bundles a Hakata–Uminonakamichi return train ticket with aquarium admission for ¥3,240 an adult and ¥1,460 an elementary child. That is ¥380 less than buying separately for an adult and ¥300 less for a child. Buy it from a reserved-seat ticket machine at your departure station or through JR Kyushu’s online train reservation. If you buy online, collect the paper ticket at a major JR Kyushu station before you board; a phone screen will not get you on.

Taking the boat there costs this family about ¥3,060 more. What it buys is 20 minutes on the water instead of a change at Kashii. If you are staying in Tenjin, where the train means two changes, it is money even better spent.

The boat return set ticket is ¥500 cheaper per adult than separate tickets, but the piers’ ticket offices do not sell it. It has to be bought in advance, in cash, at places such as the highway bus ticket office on the third floor of Hakata Bus Terminal or on the first floor of Solaria Stage in Tenjin. The adult aquarium + park combination at ¥2,690 is sold only on a Japanese-language Asoview page.

If you would like the aquarium tickets settled before the trip, Klook is an option. On 7 October 2026 the ticket showed from US$17.39; it is valid only on the date you choose, with a full refund if you cancel before 16:00 the day before. Transport and meals are not included. Adults who will also go into the park do better with the official combination at ¥2,690, and families going by train already have admission inside the JR set ticket. Planning a winter visit

From 12 January to 9 April 2027, the dolphin and sea lion shows stop while the show pool is repaired. The period includes spare days, so the shows may return sooner. Dolphins can still be seen in the Kaiju Island dolphin pool, and the big ocean tank shows carry on. The aquarium closes from 18 to 21 January 2027 and opens 10:00–17:00 from December to February.

In that period there is no show to time your arrival around, so take the aquarium slowly instead. The park has many winter closing days: 31 December and 1 January, the third Monday of January through that Friday (18–22 January in 2027), the first and second Tuesdays of January, and every Tuesday from the fourth Tuesday of January to the third Tuesday of March.

To sum up: in the morning, the boat drops you at the aquarium; in the afternoon, play in the park and take the train from the station. On a weekday you never have to plan the day around a 16:35 boat.
