Choose by your starting point and return plans
From Hakata, the Dazaifu Liner Bus “Tabito” is useful if you want to avoid transfers; from Tenjin, take the Nishitetsu train via Nishitetsu Futsukaichi. For a trip with a firm return deadline, favour rail: Nishitetsu warns that the bus can be delayed by traffic and that a full bus may refuse boarding.
Our planning example allows 2 hours for round-trip travel and waiting, plus 2 hours for the shrine approach, grounds and a break: 4 hours overall. This is an editorial time budget, not an operator’s promised itinerary. Add another 1–2 hours if you want to visit Kyushu National Museum.
From Hakata: take the direct bus, but allow for a queue
Board the Dazaifu-bound Tabito at Hakata Bus Terminal, floor 1, stand 11. Nishitetsu lists the ride to Dazaifu as approximately 40 minutes, subject to traffic.
The adult single fare is JPY 800 in cash or with an ordinary ticket. Onboard payment with a supported transit IC card or accepted contactless credit card reduces it to JPY 780; these fares were checked in September 2026. The transit-card scheme includes interoperable cards such as Suica and nimoca; credit-card payment must be contactless.
No reservation is required, but boarding is not guaranteed when the bus is full. Leave room in your schedule to wait for another departure. If it cannot, the rail alternative from Hakata is the Kuko subway line to Tenjin, a walk to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, then the train route below. You can also take the bus out and return by train; both services connect Dazaifu with central Fukuoka.
From Tenjin: change at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi
Start at Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station. It is separate from the subway’s Tenjin Station, so a subway arrival includes a walk between stations. Take the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi and change to the Dazaifu Line for Dazaifu Station; the shrine’s official guide allows about 30 minutes from Tenjin.
The adult ordinary single fare is JPY 480 under the April 2026 revision, checked in September 2026. This covers the Nishitetsu journey from Tenjin: if you start at Hakata, add the subway fare and its transfer time. The shrine’s guide puts the complete Hakata subway-and-train route at roughly 50 minutes.
Use the full name Nishitetsu Futsukaichi (西鉄二日市) when planning the change. JR Futsukaichi is a different station. Follow the departure display for Dazaifu on the day instead of relying on an old platform number.
Build the visit around the shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu’s grounds are about a 5-minute walk from Dazaifu Station. For the basic half-day plan, follow the approach to the shrine, explore the accessible grounds and leave room for a break. Choose the longer plan if you want time inside the museum.
The shrine’s access arrangements are changing. On 6 September 2026, the official Japanese notice described dismantling of the temporary shrine and restrictions in front of the main hall during paving works. It gave around 20 September as the expected resumption of worship directly in front of the main hall, not a confirmed reopening. Do not plan around guaranteed access to the forest-roofed temporary shrine or the main-hall forecourt. Read the linked works notice again before departure.
Kyushu National Museum normally opens 09:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. It closes on Mondays, moving the closure to the following day when Monday is a public or substitute holiday, and also closes at year-end. The official annual schedule lists 12 October 2026 as open and 13 October as closed. Check your exact date before adding the museum to an October holiday trip.
If you are staying near Hakata, weigh the direct bus against the risk of waiting. If you are already in Tenjin, start with the train. Keep the return leg and museum opening day in the plan before filling the remaining time.
