Give the trip a full day, and plan around the boat

Yanagawa and Dazaifu can share a day if the boat ride and a short shrine visit are your priorities. For the regular boat schedule, our suggested order is Yanagawa first, lunch and the return to the station, then Dazaifu. In summer, the long break between boat departures can reverse that order.

Our planning allowance is 8 hours: 3 for trains, transfers and walking, 2 for Yanagawa boarding and the cruise, 1 for lunch and 2 for Dazaifu. These are our time allowances, not a checked train itinerary or a promise that every connection fits. Choose one destination if you start late or want an unhurried restaurant or museum visit.

Check the season before choosing your order

This guide covers Yanagawa Kanko Kaihatsu’s Shogetsu boat terminal (松月乗船場), the operator and boarding point covered by the sightseeing ticket. The regular course is a one-way ride of about 60 minutes to the Ohana area. The final regular departure is 15:10, with check-in due 10 minutes before departure.

The summer route is different. From 1 July to 15 September 2026, the operator runs an approximately 40-minute return course to Shogetsu. Afternoon departures run from 15:40 to 19:40. The operator is closed on 16 September for the changeover.

There is a mismatch in the published morning schedule: Nishitetsu lists the final summer morning boat at 10:10, while the boat operator lists 10:40. Aim for a departure earlier than 10:10 if you choose the morning, and ask the operator for that day’s check-in deadline. Otherwise, visit Dazaifu first and plan for an afternoon boat. This order is our planning suggestion.

After the regular cruise, you still need to get back to the station

For the regular one-way course, sort out the trip back to the station before boarding. The operator lists shuttle departures from Honjo-machi Tourist Parking to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station, with a paid local bus or taxi from the Ohana area as alternatives. The shuttle has set departures and can be delayed by traffic. Do not treat the boat’s arrival as your train departure time.

Ask at the riverboat information counter after arriving at Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. Shogetsu is about a 5-minute walk from the station; the operator’s FAQ says station pickup may not always be available. The summer return course brings you back to Shogetsu instead of leaving you near Ohana, so do not copy the regular one-way return plan into a summer itinerary.

A two-day ticket is not two return day trips

The Dazaifu and Yanagawa sightseeing ticket (太宰府・柳川観光きっぷ) bundles the specified Nishitetsu rail journey and this operator’s boat ride. Either destination can come first. Its 2-day use period does not allow a return to Tenjin or Yakuin followed by another excursion the next day: returning to the starting area ends further use.

For direct Nishitetsu purchases checked in September 2026, the adult digital ticket is JPY 3,620 and the paper ticket is JPY 3,730. These are direct-sale prices, not a Klook quote. The my route app ticket requires registration and a live ticket display; if the display fails, the ticket is invalid and the travelled section’s ordinary fare is payable separately.

Klook’s Dazaifu & Yanagawa Travel Pass lists rail travel, the designated cruise, an Umegae Mochi voucher and local discounts. It suits travellers who want to arrange their own rail-and-boat day; do not read the snack voucher as an included lunch. Before purchase, open the chosen package’s redemption and cancellation conditions and confirm with the operator that the pass is accepted on your summer departure. A pass purchase should not be treated as a reserved boat departure.

Keep Dazaifu short if boarding or lunch runs late

Use Nishitetsu Futsukaichi for the transfer onto the Dazaifu Line; JR Futsukaichi is a separate station. The shrine grounds are approximately a 5-minute walk from Dazaifu Station. For the combined day, our suggestion is the approach and accessible shrine grounds, with extra attractions dropped if the Yanagawa stop runs long.

Light rain does not necessarily stop the cruise, but heavy rain may do so. Check the operator’s service status before leaving and the seller’s cancellation terms before paying. Do not assume a cancelled boat automatically refunds the entire sightseeing ticket.
