Aso in October 2026: what is open after the earthquake and volcano alert?

You can still plan Kusasenri and Daikanbo for October, provided the latest notices continue to permit access. Leave Nakadake crater viewing out of a fixed itinerary. Japan’s Meteorological Agency kept Mount Aso at eruption alert Level 2 on 25 September, with a caution zone of roughly 1 km around Nakadake’s First Crater. The Level 3 notice from 14 August, with its larger restricted radius, was reduced on 1 September.

Why Level 2 does not mean the crater is open

The JMA alert and the local sightseeing closure are separate. In addition to the volcanic caution zone, the Aso crater notice lists a restriction connected to the search after a sightseeing helicopter accident in January 2026. Do not book a tour, taxi or hotel on the assumption that you can reach the crater overlook. A Kusasenri walk and an outer-rim stop at Daikanbo still make a coherent Aso day without it.

What three traveler accounts add

Ongaku no Mori’s account of a 22 September 2026 drive reached Kusasenri around 09:00 after sunrise at Daikanbo and reported a long parking queue after noon; the writer viewed the crater only from afar. A different Kusasenri review posted on 15 September 2026 describes a drive past Komezuka, a viewpoint stop, lunch and a café, but gives no visit date. Atsushi’s drive account, posted in September 2026, concerns a 21–22 September 2025 trip: about 40 minutes walking at Kusasenri and 40 at Daikanbo. Its 2025 crater visit does not establish 2026 access. Together, these accounts support leaving separate time for the grassland and rim viewpoint, while using current official notices alone for crater access.

Does the rail disruption stop the Aso journey?

JR Kyushu says the Kyushu Shinkansen resumed through service on 18 September. The Kagoshima Main Line between Uto and Yatsushiro, south of Kumamoto, remains suspended through 9 October with normal schedules planned from the first train on 10 October; Kumamoto–Uto is running fewer trains. Weather could change that plan. This is a particular rail section, not a closure of Kusasenri or Daikanbo. If your route continues toward southern Kyushu, check the JR Kyushu service notice again before buying your connections.

Which lodging discount applies in October?

The Aso City promotion often described as a “¥5,000 voucher” applies to September stays through 30 September 2026, on direct bookings with participating properties. It discounts qualifying pre-tax nightly accommodation by ¥5,000 or ¥2,000 according to the price bracket, and has a separate ¥2,000 local coupon usable through 1 October. Do not subtract it from an October booking.

Kumamoto Prefecture has announced a different recovery promotion for stays from 1 October through 25 December 2026: up to 60% off eligible lodging or travel products. The discount cap is ¥20,000 for lodging-only or one-night transport packages, ¥30,000 for transport packages of two or more nights, and ¥35,000 for tours staying in at least two prefectures. Participating sellers and available budget still determine availability. Existing reservations are excluded. Read the exact plan at the seller before calculating a fare.

The day before travel and again that morning, read JMA’s Aso activity notice for the current level and radius, then the local crater access notice for roads and visitor areas. Keep the grassland itinerary only if those current notices still support it.
