Fukuoka to Yufuin: Train or Bus, Booking and Sold-Out Alternatives

Choose by your starting point and the train you want

Book Yufuin no Mori if the sightseeing train is part of the reason for the trip. For a departure from Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, or a lower ordinary fare, check the Yufuin-go highway bus first. From Hakata, include the regular Limited Express Yufu in your search rather than looking only for Yufuin no Mori.

These are editorial suggestions based on the official routes and booking rules below. They do not assume that a seat is available on your travel date.

The published Yufuin no Mori 1 schedule is Hakata 09:17 to Yufuin 11:31, a journey of 2 hours 14 minutes. The bus takes roughly 2 hours from Hakata, with differences between stopping patterns; traffic can add delay. Before choosing, add the journey to your boarding point.

Check the train name before paying

Yufuin no Mori requires a seat reservation before boarding. The regular Yufu appears in the same Hakata–Yufuin search, but it is a different train product. If the sightseeing service has sold out, search Yufu and other departure times before dropping rail from the plan.

Ordinary reserved tickets open at 10:00 JST one month before travel. Use JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation for ordinary single or return tickets. Enter Hakata and Yufuin, your date and passenger count; if you do not already hold the base fare, select the combination of base-fare and limited-express tickets.

For paper-ticket collection through that service, bring the payment card, reservation number and identification number to a JR Kyushu ticket office or machine. Allow time for collection before going to the platform. The English service description says it handles regular-price tickets, so do not assume that a Japanese-site discount or a Rail Pass reservation works through the same booking path.

The published timetable needs one more check: the operating notice. JR Kyushu’s notice dated 18 August 2026 schedules Yufu 73/74 in place of Yufuin no Mori 3/4 through 18 September, with normal operation planned to resume on 19 September. From October, scheduled inspection days still affect the service. Open the latest notice and operating calendar for your date, then read the train name in the booking result.

Booking the bus: the terminal and payment deadline matter

The Yufuin-go route serves Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, Hakata Bus Terminal and Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, ending at Yufuin-ekimae Bus Center. The airport lists Yufuin departures at International Terminal stop 10; a domestic arrival needs a terminal transfer for this bus. Choose a departure after allowing for arrival formalities and baggage collection, rather than treating the flight’s landing time as your bus boarding time.

Seat reservations are required. They open at 08:00 JST on the same calendar date in the month before travel. Start at the Nishitetsu route page and follow its reservation/availability link, then select your actual boarding stop and complete payment by the deadline displayed.

The WEB早割7 fare is JPY 2,880 one way for an adult, limited to selected services and seats, with online reservation and online credit-card payment required. The current route webpage states that payment is due both within 3 days including the booking date and at least 8 days before travel. Read the deadline on your reservation rather than inferring it from the discount’s name. Some fare plans restrict changes; read the change and cancellation terms before paying.

If the direct services do not work

Try Yufu, another bus departure, then a route via Oita. JR Kyushu offers a separate ticket called こっちでも行けるよ！ゆふいんきっぷ for a limited express such as Sonic from Hakata via Kokura to Oita, followed by a local train to Yufuin.

The regular-car reserved-seat version is JPY 4,300 one way per adult, for travel from 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. It is sold through the Japanese JR Kyushu internet reservation service for Web members; the reserved seat applies to Hakata–Oita, subject to availability. It does not cover the Hakata–Kokura Shinkansen or an Oita–Yufuin limited express. Check the ticket’s route conditions and the arrival time after the Oita connection before buying it.

Book the journey back as well. When returning directly to the airport, leave room for road delays and your airline’s check-in requirements.
