Is the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass worth it? Three ticket comparisons

A Beppu return trip does not pay for the pass

Individual tickets for a single Hakata–Beppu return cost less than the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass. Add Nagasaki and the pass can start to pay off, although advance-purchase discounts can reverse that result. Price the tickets you can actually buy for your dates, then add any pass reservation fees.

As checked in September 2026, an adult Northern Kyushu pass costs JPY 14,000 for 3 consecutive days or JPY 16,000 for 5 consecutive days through JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking. The official overseas-agency and JR Kyushu counter prices are JPY 15,000 and JPY 17,000 respectively; an agency’s final currency total may differ. Days cannot be spread across separate parts of a trip.

Three itineraries, with the arithmetic shown

Each example is for one adult making return excursions from Hakata, with ordinary reserved seats at normal-season fares on operating days. The totals exclude local transport, accommodation and paid advance reservations made with the pass. Check your actual dates in JR Kyushu’s route search and service notices before committing to the itinerary.

One-way fares from Hakata: one adult, normal-season reserved seats (September 2026)

These are the operator’s published one-way fares. The online-discount column requires JR Kyushu’s Japanese-language booking service; check that you can complete the booking and obtain the tickets.

The regular figures include the basic fare and normal-season reserved-seat limited-express charges. These discounts belong to JR Kyushu’s Japanese-language internet booking service; its multilingual individual-ticket service sells regular-price tickets only. Use the discount column only if you can complete that booking process and obtain the required tickets. Kumamoto’s online fare changes by season, so replace the published comparison figures with the fare for your date, train and seat.

Return-trip comparisons

Hakata–Beppu day trip. Regular tickets total 6,910 × 2 = JPY 13,820; standard online tickets total 3,500 × 2 = JPY 7,000. Against the JPY 14,000 pass, the online tickets save JPY 7,000, and even the regular return is cheaper than the pass.

Beppu on the first day and Nagasaki on the third day of a consecutive 3-day period. Regular tickets total (6,910 + 6,490) × 2 = JPY 26,800; standard online tickets total (3,500 + 4,500) × 2 = JPY 16,000. The direct-online 3-day pass saves JPY 2,000 against those online tickets.

Beppu, Nagasaki and Kumamoto on the first, third and fifth days. Regular tickets total (6,910 + 6,490 + 5,840) × 2 = JPY 38,480; standard online tickets total (3,500 + 4,500 + 5,310) × 2 = JPY 26,620. The JPY 16,000 direct-online 5-day pass is JPY 10,620 cheaper than that online-ticket basket. This is the stronger case for a pass if those excursions were already part of your plans.

There is a cheaper version of the middle itinerary: 九州ネット早特3 to Beppu at JPY 2,950 each way and かもめネット早特3 to Nagasaki at JPY 3,850 each way. If all outward and return tickets are available, (2,950 + 3,850) × 2 = JPY 13,600, which is JPY 400 less than the pass. Both products require purchase at least 3 days before travel and have limited allocations. They bind you to the booked trains and seats; missing a train means buying a separate limited-express ticket for another service, and cancellations after payment incur a fee. The standard-discount totals for these Hakata–Beppu and Hakata–Nagasaki returns are therefore not the lowest possible prices.

Count the dates and the reservation fees

Both Northern Kyushu passes allow up to 6 free ordinary reserved-seat bookings at JR Kyushu counters or reserved-seat machines in Kyushu. A Relay Kamome–Kamome connection at Takeo-Onsen counts as one reservation when you stay inside the gates, making the final itinerary 6 reservations in total. A 5-day pass does not add more free reservations. After the limit, reserved travel needs an additional limited-express ticket for each train; non-reserved travel within the pass area remains unlimited.

Paid advance booking before collection is a separate KRP Option Ticket service: JPY 1,000 per adult section for ordinary limited expresses and Shinkansen, or JPY 1,500 for Design & Story sightseeing trains. These paid bookings do not use the free 6-reservation allowance. For the middle itinerary, pre-booking just the Sonic return this way while reserving Nagasaki locally brings the pass cost to 14,000 + 1,000 × 2 = JPY 16,000, equal to the standard online-ticket total.

Dates matter as well: if those Beppu and Nagasaki excursions fall on the first and fifth days, one 3-day pass cannot cover both. The JPY 16,000 direct-online 5-day pass then merely matches the standard online-ticket total, before any paid advance reservations.

Check coverage and eligibility before buying

This article concerns the JR Kyushu Northern Kyushu pass. It covers ordinary and limited-express trains within its northern area, the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kumamoto, and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen between Takeo-Onsen and Nagasaki. The Hakata–Kokura Sanyo Shinkansen, subways, buses and other operators’ railways such as Nishitetsu are excluded. Keep those costs outside your pass savings.

Eligibility requires a non-Japanese passport, residence outside Japan and entry for sightseeing under Temporary Visitor status; carry the passport showing that status. JR Kyushu’s direct purchase page offers the online prices used here. Direct pass bookings open at 10:00 JST one month before travel. Collect the physical pass at a designated JR Kyushu counter before boarding, bringing your passport and the physical credit card used to pay. A full train alone does not entitle you to a pass refund.
