The Key Criteria — You Only Need to Check Three Things

First, when you buy. Following an April 9, 2026 announcement, the six JR Group companies revised prices for purchases made on or after October 1, 2026. The key point is that the change differs by channel. Overseas authorized agencies (travel agency counters) go up, while the official website (Web sales, JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation) stays frozen. In other words, after October 1 it is cheaper to buy directly from the official site.

Second, how far and how often you travel. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip (reserved seat ¥28,340) alone makes the 7-day pass (¥50,000) a loss. A Tokyo–Hiroshima round trip (¥39,520) almost reaches the break-even point. Whether your total travel cost exceeds the pass price is the only criterion.

Third, whether you need to ride Nozomi. As a rule, you cannot board Nozomi or Mizuho with the JR Pass, so you must detour via Hikari or buy a dedicated ticket separately.

• Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka round trip (5–7 days): Consider the 7-day pass, but with only the round trip it’s slightly a loss. If you add travel such as Kyoto–Hiroshima, it turns into a gain.
• Tokyo–Hiroshima/Kyushu (7–14 days): Even the Hiroshima round trip alone comes close to break-even, so the 7-day or 14-day pass is the strong candidate.
• Focus on one region (Kansai only, Hokkaido only): A regional pass is cheaper than the nationwide pass.

How to Reserve and Buy

1. Overseas agencies and sellers: Buy an Exchange Order from a travel agency, then exchange it for the pass at a JR station after arrival (must be exchanged within 3 months of issue).
2. Official online (JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation): Buy with your passport + credit card, paid in yen. The online-only benefit is being able to reserve seats in advance before exchanging. After October 1, this is the channel to choose.
3. Sold within Japan: Some stations issue passes directly, but there are price and stock issues (subject to confirmation).

Eligibility is limited to foreign tourists on a “temporary visitor” stay. Because you choose the start date within one month of the exchange date, you can also plan to stay in Tokyo for a few days after arrival before activating it.

Tips and Cautions Worth Knowing

• Nozomi and Mizuho are not allowed as a rule. To ride them you must buy the dedicated “Nozomi/Mizuho ticket” for JR Pass holders, which is ¥4,960 for Tokyo–Kyoto/Shin-Osaka and ¥6,500 for Tokyo–Hiroshima on the current special-ticket table; check your segment before purchase. Detouring via Hikari adds about 1 hour 25 minutes for Tokyo–Hiroshima.
• Private railways and subways are all excluded. Tokyo Metro, Osaka Metro, Hankyu, Hanshin, Kintetsu and others require separate payment, so use an IC card alongside.
• Paying when the exchange rate is favorable works to your advantage. The official site charges in yen.
• The end date of the frozen Web sales is undecided (“we will announce once determined”), so buying early is advantageous.
