Hakata Station luggage storage: lockers, counters or hotel delivery?

A free locker is useful only if your case fits and you can get back before it closes. If you are at Hakata Station with your bag now, start with the station counters and lockers below. Crosta is outside the Shinkansen gates; you do not need a train ticket to reach it.

Still at the airport, or checking out before an evening flight? Delivery can save the trip back for your bag, but the hand-in deadline and your exact hotel decide whether it works. Those options follow the station section.

Already at Hakata Station with your case

Hakata Station has lockers run by three different operators. Add up the large and extra-large compartments they each publish and you get more than 500.

The JR lockers are the cheapest large ones. The bank under the eaves at the Chikushi Exit is open around the clock, and the other three run from early morning to around midnight. They take cash or a rail IC card. Subway lockers open only from the first train to the last, and nothing comes out after the last train. Past midnight you pay another day, and three days is the limit.

In October 2026, do not count on the AMU Plaza numbers. Most of the third-floor lockers are out of use from 1 to 9 October while they are replaced, the Kooten 9F bank from 12 to 16 October, and the 10F bank from 19 to 23 October. If you are there on those dates, try elsewhere first.

A big count does not mean a free compartment. A Taiwanese solo traveler who posted in June 2025 had scouted the lockers the day before. On the last day, after checking out, “every” locker in the station was full. The availability page the information desk pointed to did not match what was in front of them, and other visitors stood around with their cases in the same situation. The traveler carried the case to Tenjin and found plenty of lockers there, but no change machine, and had to buy something small to break a note.

So with a big case at Hakata Station, this is how I would do it. Check the one locker bank nearest to where you are standing. If it is full, go straight to a staffed counter. The difference between a ¥900 subway locker and ¥1,000 at Crosta is ¥100. Hauling a case around other floors costs you more than that.

There are three staffed counters.

• Crosta Hakata: JR Hakata Station, second floor, just outside the Shinkansen Hikari Plaza gate, beside the Midori no Uketsuke ticket machine. Stay outside the paid area; lifts connect from the subway and other station approaches. ¥1,000 a day, 9:00–20:00 every day. Since 1 April 2026 it has charged ¥1,000 per item whatever the size, so an older post quoting ¥800 for a small bag is out of date. A bag strapped to your suitcase counts as a separate item, and laptops, cameras and tablets are not accepted. At weekends and over holidays it can stop taking bags when it is full. Come back after 20:00 and you collect after 9:00 the next day, with another ¥1,000 per item.
• JR Kyushu baggage counter: on the first-floor concourse in front of the Central Gate, moved on some days next to the lift on AMU Plaza’s first floor by the Hakata Exit. ¥1,000 a day, ¥1,500 at peak times, open 10:30–18:30.
• TABINAKA: second floor of KITTE Hakata (Hakata Marui), two minutes from the Hakata Exit. Open 10:00–21:00, the latest of the three. Priced by the sum of the three sides: ¥500 up to 100 cm, ¥1,000 for 101–139 cm, ¥1,300 from 140 cm. Prices go up ¥100 in November and December, and booking by the day before takes ¥100 off.

Crosta also sends bags from the station to hotels. Hand one in by 14:00 and for ¥1,500 you collect it at a listed hotel after 18:00. It suits a day you spend around the station before heading straight to the hotel.

Tenjin and Nakasu

Tenjin has fewer lockers than Hakata, spread across more places. Tenjin subway station has 127 large and extra-large compartments, and there are more at Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and the Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal. Large ones cost ¥900. Like the traveler above, you can get stuck without coins, so carry some ¥100 pieces.

For staff to take the bag, CARGO PASS has a counter in the Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin main building, basement floor, next to the tax-free counter. It is open 10:00–20:00 and charges ¥550–1,650 depending on size. There are CARGO PASS counters at Don Quijote Tenjin Nishidori on the fifth floor (9:00–21:00) and at Don Quijote Nakasu (9:00–12:00 and 17:00–23:00) as well.

Arrival day: send it straight to the hotel

Say your flight lands at Fukuoka Airport’s International Terminal in the late morning, and your hotel will not check you in until three in the afternoon. That gap could be Dazaifu, or lunch in Tenjin. Either way, you are not taking a suitcase with you. How you spend the afternoon comes down to where the suitcase spends it.

The International Terminal’s first floor has three counters that take bags to city hotels the same day: CARGO PASS, DELIBAG and Sagawa Express. What sets them apart is less the price than how late each one takes a bag.

The clock that matters is when you are standing at the counter, not when the wheels touch down. Allow 30 to 60 minutes from landing, through immigration and baggage claim, to the arrivals hall, and up to 90 in the evening when flights bunch up. Subtract that from each deadline and you get the “land by” column below.

CARGO PASS and DELIBAG deliver to hotels in Fukuoka’s Hakata and Chuo wards, which is to say around Hakata Station, Nakasu and Tenjin. The CARGO PASS list also has one hotel by the airport. Sagawa Express delivers only to participating hotels. Whichever you use, your hotel has to be on the list, and CARGO PASS and DELIBAG also check that you are actually staying there. If you are still choosing where to stay, that alone tips the balance toward Hakata or Tenjin.

With a single cabin-size case, I would go to CARGO PASS. At ¥550 it is the cheapest line on the table, and cheaper than a locker. With a full-size case packed close to 23 kg, I would pick DELIBAG. CARGO PASS charges ¥1,650 for anything of 20 kg or more, while DELIBAG’s autumn campaign, which began on 1 September 2026, charges ¥1,200 whatever the size. That is ¥450 less, and the bag may reach the hotel earlier too. Use the time you can actually hand over the bag, not the landing time: DELIBAG may still work before its 15:00 cutoff. After that, Sagawa is the later option in this table, until 16:00, for a participating hotel.

It is just as clear who these do not suit. CARGO PASS will not deliver to a hotel with no staff at the front desk. DELIBAG does take unstaffed hotels and guesthouses if you contact it on LINE or KakaoTalk first, but its autumn discount excludes Airbnb and guesthouses. If you plan to change at the hotel before 18:00, CARGO PASS is the wrong choice. Its own FAQ says you collect from 18:00, and the airport’s page says the bag arrives by 18:00. Plan as if your bag arrives in the early evening.

At the counter at 14:40? CARGO PASS’s 14:00 deadline has passed, but DELIBAG’s 15:00 deadline has not. If your hotel is eligible and the counter can accept your bag before the cutoff, ask DELIBAG first. Its online form’s 16:00 flight-arrival limit does not extend the 15:00 hand-in deadline. What eats your time at the counter

CARGO PASS has dropped advance booking. You apply at the counter on the day. That is why a queue can build there. A Japanese traveler who posted in July 2026 stopped at the toilets and the duty-free shop first, ended up in the queue, and missed a bus to Dazaifu. The steps were to send a screenshot of the hotel booking by LINE, scan a QR code to fill in the form, then pay, and the author, who is Japanese, says it still took more than five minutes. The bag reached the hotel at about 17:30, a little earlier than the “from 18:00” they had been told.

So head for the counter before anything else once you are through arrivals. Before you join the queue, screenshot the booking page showing both your name and the hotel name. If the hotel cannot confirm your stay, the bag goes back to the counter and storage is charged on top.

DELIBAG works the other way: you can apply in advance. Upload a photo showing the hotel name, the name on the booking and the check-in date, add your name in English and your flight number, and pay online. If you want to skip the queue, this is the easier one. If you would rather pay in your own currency, Klook sells the same DELIBAG service. On 7 October 2026 it was US$7.59 per suitcase, with dates available from the next day. Book one per suitcase; it only covers hotels in Hakata and Chuo wards.

When delivery is worth it

Delivery is not the only cost. You still pay to get into town yourself. So if your first stop is on the way to your hotel anyway, compare it with taking a taxi to the hotel and leaving the bags there.

A family of four with four full-size cases over 20 kg would pay ¥4,800 to send them with DELIBAG at the campaign price, or ¥6,600 with CARGO PASS. Four subway fares add ¥1,040. A larger taxi from the airport to Hakata Station is about ¥2,100–2,800. If everyone and every case fits in one car, going to the hotel first and leaving the bags is far cheaper. Check beforehand that the hotel will hold bags before check-in. Two people with two cabin cases pay ¥1,100 to send them plus ¥520 in subway fares, ¥1,620 in all, about the same as a standard taxi to Hakata Station at ¥1,500–1,900.

Delivery earns its price when your afternoon starts somewhere other than your hotel: straight from the airport to Dazaifu, or a day with no gap to drop by the hotel before check-in. Our Fukuoka Airport to Hakata or Tenjin guide compares the taxi, bus and subway.

Work it out by suitcase size

So far the question has been delivery or locker. In practice, which compartment your case fits and which price band it falls into changes the answer, because every operator measures differently. We applied the prices on 7 October 2026 to three common cases. Sizes are outer dimensions including wheels and handle, and the three sides add up to 118 cm, 139 cm and 158 cm.

Three things stand out. For a cabin case, CARGO PASS delivery costs less than any locker with published inner dimensions that the case fits in. For a 23 kg full-size case, DELIBAG’s campaign price is ¥450 below CARGO PASS. For medium and full-size cases, a locker is ¥200–300 cheaper than the cheapest delivery. What you give up for that saving is a trip back to the station in the evening.

At a locker, look at thickness, not height. By the operators’ published dimensions, the large subway and Nishitetsu lockers at Hakata and Tenjin are 35.5 cm wide inside, and the large airport lockers 34.2 cm. Stand a case upright and its thickness has to fit that width. A case expanded to 36 cm will not go into a large compartment. The next size up, extra large, costs ¥1,200 in the subway, and there are only 13 at Hakata and 12 at Tenjin.

Here the sums flip again. Crosta, where staff take the bag, costs ¥1,000, less than a ¥1,200 extra-large locker. A group of Taiwanese travelers in Fukuoka in May 2025 found the same on their last day at Hakata Station: in a hurry, they could not get their case into a large locker, and paid ¥1,000 a piece at the staffed counter instead. If the thickness is borderline, do not spend time at the lockers. Go straight to a counter.

Checkout day, and the trip to the airport

Ask your hotel first. Whether it holds bags, and until when, differs from hotel to hotel. Toyoko Inn, for example, lets guests use its self-service cloakroom free only on the day itself, before check-in or after checkout, between 6:00 and 23:00, and the hotel does not take custody of what you leave. The Taiwanese traveler above came to the same conclusion: ask the hotel first whether you can leave bags after checkout, and line up a few backups in case the answer is no.

On an evening flight, you can send the bag ahead from the hotel to the airport. Then you spend the last day in town without going back to the hotel.

CARGO PASS’s hotel list has 194 hotels for airport-to-hotel and 96 for hotel-to-airport (we counted them on 7 October 2026). The lists differ: find your exact accommodation in the list for the direction you need. For hotel-to-airport delivery, a nearby partner hotel cannot take the bag for you unless you are staying there. The CARGO PASS counter at the International Terminal is open until 19:30.

DELIBAG’s hotel pick-up is stricter than it looks. The driver takes the bag from you at the hotel’s main entrance at the time you booked. You cannot leave it at the front desk, and if you are not there within eight minutes the booking is cancelled. Book by the day before.

If you will reach the airport after 19:30, none of these will have your bag waiting. If the hotel will hold it, collect it on your way to the airport; if not, use a locker or a staffed counter.

What about a day when you change hotels? None of the operators here lists a same-day route from one city hotel to another. Between Hakata and Tenjin, the simplest way is to take the bag yourself in the morning and leave it at the new hotel. The subway takes 5 minutes from the airport to Hakata and 11 to Tenjin, so the two stations are only a few minutes apart.

Moving on to Yufuin or Beppu

On the day you leave Hakata for Yufuin or Beppu, JR Kyushu runs a same-day delivery. Hand your case to its counter in front of the Central Gate on Hakata Station’s first floor between 8:30 and 10:00, pay ¥2,500 a piece for up to 160 cm, and it reaches your hotel or ryokan by about 18:00. The bags ride the Sonic limited express to Oita and go on by van from there. It serves members of the Yufuin and Beppu hotel and ryokan associations, listed in JR Kyushu’s PDF.

The usual mistake with this service is timing. The counter takes bags for only an hour and a half in the morning, and on some days it moves to AMU Plaza’s first floor. Arrive at the station at 9:50 and start looking for it, and you may be too late. Look for the spot the day before, when you pass through Hakata Station. JR Kyushu lists no service in the other direction, from Yufuin or Beppu back to Hakata.

If you would like to pay in advance, Klook sells the same JR Kyushu service per piece. On 7 October 2026 it was US$15.79, bookable from the next day, with free cancellation before the date of use. Klook gives a limit of 200 for the three sides (no unit shown) and 20 kg, while JR Kyushu’s own information says 160 size. If your case is over 160 cm, check with JR Kyushu first.

One thing before you hand it over

CARGO PASS, DELIBAG, Crosta and JR Kyushu all cap compensation at ¥100,000 per bag. CARGO PASS covers broken wheels and handles only on cases less than five years old, and never scratches or dents. Keep laptops, cameras and valuables with you.

DELIBAG has not announced when its autumn campaign ends. When it does, cases over 140 cm go back to ¥1,500. With a big case, check again the week you travel.
