Choose by your drop-off point and luggage

Take a direct bus from Fukuoka Airport International Terminal if avoiding a terminal transfer matters most; compare the free shuttle plus subway if you want the lower adult fare. For Hakata, the Nishitetsu direct bus now drops you at Hakata Station’s Chikushi Exit; for Tenjin, Airport Express goes to Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal. Put your accommodation and the bus stop on the same map before choosing.

If you are still choosing a base, compare Hakata and Tenjin for your daily departures and evenings.

The airport’s official subway guide places the station at the Domestic Terminal, so an international arrival needs the free terminal shuttle first. Leave the international arrivals area and use shuttle stop 5, then get off at the Domestic Terminal’s south bus area and follow the subway signs. The shuttle ride takes about 10 minutes, with traffic able to make it longer. That estimate excludes immigration, baggage collection, waiting and the walk to the train.

Once aboard the Airport Line, the ride is about 5 minutes to Hakata and 11 minutes to Tenjin, with no train change for either. The adult one-way subway fare is JPY 260 to either destination, checked in September 2026. The widely quoted “5 minutes to Hakata” describes this train ride, not the whole journey from an international flight.

Hakata: use the Chikushi Exit bus information

Nishitetsu’s direct bus leaves international stops 6 and 7 for Hakata Station (Chikushi Exit). Its city stop changed from Hakata Bus Terminal on 26 April 2025. If your saved guide still says Hakata Bus Terminal, check the walk to your hotel from Chikushi Exit instead.

As checked in September 2026, the regular adult one-way fare is JPY 400, reduced to JPY 380 when paid on board with a transport IC card or a supported contactless payment card. The route is part of a cashless-bus trial, with passengers asked to prepare a card or ticket in advance. Tickets bought from the airport’s ticket machines are accepted; the operator’s FAQ says passengers who unavoidably need to pay cash should speak to the driver. Prepare payment before joining the queue.

Choosing this bus removes the Domestic Terminal transfer from the journey; it does not guarantee the shortest trip to your hotel. Compare the walk from the bus stop with the walk from your intended subway exit.

Tenjin: Airport Express has different payment rules

Nishitetsu Airport Express leaves international stop 8 and runs without intermediate stops to Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal. As checked in September 2026, its regular adult one-way fare is JPY 500, or JPY 480 when paid entirely with a transport IC card. Credit cards are not accepted on this route, and combining cash with an IC card means paying the regular fare. Do not apply the Hakata bus’s contactless-card rules to this service.

The service has a luggage compartment; passengers are asked to load their cases themselves and tell staff if they need help. Consider it if moving a suitcase through the terminal transfer is your main concern.

Check the departure before committing to this option. The timetable linked by Nishitetsu as current from 1 April 2026 lists the last International Terminal departure at 18:35 on both weekdays and weekends/public holidays. For an arrival after that service, start by checking the shuttle and subway connection.

The airport also lists HEARTS buses to Hakata and Tenjin at international stop 11. HEARTS is a separate operator, so the Nishitetsu fares, payment rules and timetable above do not apply to it.

Arriving late: check both parts of the connection

Open the airport’s International Terminal shuttle timetable and the subway’s Fukuoka Airport Station timetable for the Meinohama/Karatsu direction, choosing the correct day type. Plan from the time you expect to emerge from arrivals, rather than the aircraft’s landing time. Looking only at the last subway departure leaves out the transfer from the International Terminal.

If the connection has finished, or moving luggage between services is impractical for you, the International Terminal has taxi pick-up points on the first floor. Show the driver your accommodation address and mention your luggage before asking for a fare estimate.
