Choose around your departures and evenings
Start with hotels near Hakata Station if your trip involves JR trains or Shinkansen departures from Fukuoka. Look in Tenjin first if shopping and evenings around Tenjin are the main reason for your stay. This editorial advice follows the transport network and local destinations; weigh it against your own itinerary.
Put your morning departure points and final evening stops on a map before comparing hotels. For a mixed itinerary, shortlist a hotel in each area and compare the routes you will repeat, especially with luggage.
Hakata for rail departures, Tenjin for local evenings
Hakata connects with JR services around Kyushu and handles Fukuoka’s Shinkansen services. If several mornings begin with a train from Hakata, give priority to the walk between your hotel and the station. Do not stop your route check at the station’s map pin: trace it to the entrance and platform you will use.

Hakata also has shopping in the station complex, including JR Hakata City and Hakata Hankyu. Keep those shopping stops in mind when choosing a base for rail travel.
Tenjin has department stores and shopping malls, while nearby Daimyo, Imaizumi and Kego have cafes and restaurants. If those are where you intend to end your evenings, compare the walk back to each hotel from your final stop.

A day trip outside Fukuoka does not automatically favour Hakata. For Dazaifu by Nishitetsu railway, there is a route from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station with a change at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi onto the Dazaifu Line. If that outing is paired with an evening in Tenjin, shortlist hotels around the relevant station and your evening plans.
Both areas have the Airport Line; check your terminal
Hakata and Tenjin stations are both on the subway Airport Line. For this area comparison, give the journeys you will repeat during the stay more weight than airport access alone.
The airport subway station connects to the Domestic Terminal. If you arrive at the International Terminal and choose the subway, the airport directs you to use the free terminal shuttle to the domestic side first. Plan the full journey from arrival to the hotel, including entry procedures, shuttle waiting, movement through the station and the final walk.
Check that full route against your arrival or departure time before booking a hotel for an early flight or late arrival.
Compare the hotel entrance, station and booking terms
Tenjin Station is on the Airport Line; Tenjin-minami is on the Nanakuma Line; Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) is the Nishitetsu railway station. Search using the specific station your itinerary needs.
For each shortlisted hotel, check:
- The walking route from its actual entrance to your station entrance and platform, including the elevator route if you have a suitcase or stroller.
- The route home from the final stop of your evening.
- The total for the same stay dates, guests, room and cancellation terms, plus whether taxes are included. Compare the hotel’s official booking page with the terms of the offer you intend to reserve.
We have not checked like-for-like room prices for this article, so it does not rank either area as cheaper. Use the area choice to narrow your search, then compare the exact hotel routes and booking totals.
