Choose the ticket by how many hells you want to see

At standard admission prices, individual tickets cost less for up to four Beppu hells; the combined ticket becomes cheaper at five. Decide which places interest you before buying a pass. Bus travel is a separate purchase.

The hells are geothermal sightseeing attractions, distinct from baths you can soak in. Some have foot baths, but a hells ticket does not replace a bathing itinerary.

For an adult, four individual admissions cost JPY 2,000; five cost JPY 2,500, which is JPY 100 more than the combined ticket. The same five-stop threshold applies to the student category: JPY 250 × 5 = JPY 1,250, against JPY 1,200 for the combined ticket. These are comparisons of the published standard prices.

Buy the combined ticket at whichever hell you visit first. It is valid on the purchase date and the following day, with one entry to each hell. It is not an unlimited re-entry pass. A two-day split is therefore possible, but the bus ticket has its own validity.

Plan the route as two groups

Five hells are within walking distance of each other in Kannawa: Umi Jigoku, Oniishibozu Jigoku, Kamado Jigoku, Oniyama Jigoku and Shiraike Jigoku. Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku form the other group, about 3 km away; the association recommends a bus or car between the areas.

For a self-guided route, we suggest Umi → Oniishibozu → Kamado → Oniyama → Shiraike, followed by the bus to the Chinoike and Tatsumaki area. If only a couple of places interest you, plan the day around them instead of all seven.

For a self-guided trip starting at Beppu Station, these are useful bus connections:

  • Take Kamenoi route 2 from stand 3 at Beppu Station West Exit to Umi Jigoku-mae (海地獄前).
  • From Kannawa (鉄輪), route 16 leaves stand 2 for Chinoike Jigoku-mae (血の池地獄前).
  • From Chinoike Jigoku-mae, route 26 returns toward Kannawa; route 16 continues via Kamegawa toward Beppu Station.

Read the destination as well as the route number. The operator publishes separate weekday and weekend/public-holiday timetables in its official timetable list. Pick the connection between the two areas and your return bus before filling the gaps with sightseeing.

Keep admission and bus passes separate

My Beppu Free is a Kamenoi local-bus pass. The Mini version covers the Kannawa and hells area, with standard adult prices of JPY 1,100 for one day and JPY 1,700 for two days. It cannot be used on Oita Kotsu buses. Compare the fares for your intended journeys with the pass price; the number of hells alone does not determine whether a bus pass saves money.

Paper and digital My Beppu Free tickets have different benefits: the paper pass offers JPY 200 off the adult combined hells admission, or JPY 100 off the child category, when presented. Digital bus tickets are excluded from this benefit. This is an admission discount, not included admission.

The BEPPU ROUND TOUR PASSPORT is another product covering participating tourist facilities. Its purchase and use conditions should not be applied to the seven-hell combined ticket or to My Beppu Free. Check which product you are actually buying.

Leave room for the geyser and the trip home

The seven hells normally open from 08:00 to 17:00. As an editorial planning suggestion, give Kannawa the morning and visit the other area after lunch. Leave some time open.

Tatsumaki is the main reason to avoid a rigid schedule. In the association’s posted January 2026 notice, management reports longer waits before eruptions and unstable eruption durations, affected by natural conditions. Ask about the current situation when you arrive; do not assume a fixed eruption interval or plan it immediately before a booked departure.

If you are staying overnight, the combined ticket lets you visit the remaining hells the following day, within its purchase-date validity. If you also want an onsen bath, schedule that separately from viewing the hot springs.
