Beppu day onsen: Furosen public bath or a private bath at Hyotan?

For a low-cost bath near Beppu Station, start with Furosen Onsen; for a bath your group can use together, consider a private family bath at Hyotan Onsen. Hyotan also has communal baths and operates as a day-use facility, so an overnight booking is not needed.

Start with who will share the bath. Hyotan’s communal baths have separate men’s and women’s areas, while a family bath is rented privately and is offered to friends and couples as well as families. Talk through whether your group wants a bath to itself before comparing prices.

Furosen: a short walk from the station

Furosen Onsen (不老泉) is a municipal bath about a 5-minute walk from Beppu Station, with hotter and warmer tubs. Consider it if you want a soak without adding another journey across town.

Rates checked in September 2026 are JPY 250 for junior-high-school students and older, JPY 100 for elementary-school children, and free admission for younger children. The published hours are 06:30–22:30, with maintenance closure at the end of the year on dates that are not fixed. Check the city’s closure calendar through the facility page when setting your visit date.

Towels, soap and shampoo appear as separate paid items on Furosen’s amenity list. Pack a towel and toiletries if you want to keep the visit simple.

Hyotan: compare the bill for your actual group

Hyotan Onsen is in Kannawa, and communal admission and private family baths have separate tariffs. The official price table gives the rates below, checked in September 2026.

For 2 adults, communal admission totals JPY 2,320, so the private bath costs JPY 80 more. For 3 adults, communal admission totals JPY 3,480, making the private bath JPY 1,080 cheaper. These calculations cover bathing charges only; towels, food and transport are excluded.

There is a trade-off: the private rate buys a timed bath to yourselves, while the communal charge buys entry to shared bathing areas. Choose the experience you want, then compare the cost. For a group with children, use their ages and the private bath’s additional-person charges rather than the adult examples above.

Confirm Hyotan’s family-bath reservation rules

Hyotan’s dedicated Japanese family-bath page says all family baths require advance reservation, with telephone bookings opening 1 week before the visit date. Its facilities overview separately lists some rooms for same-day booking. If you need a bath today, confirm the options with the family-bath desk before travelling: 0977-67-3010 within Japan, or +81-977-67-3010 from abroad. These statements concern Hyotan, not every private bath in Beppu.

For the call, write down your preferred date, possible arrival times, number of adults and children’s ages. If someone needs assistance moving or bathing, request a suitable room: Hyotan marks specific family baths as accessible. Plan around the 60-minute option and ask during the booking call about a longer visit, changes and cancellation terms.

Hyotan’s communal baths open 09:00–24:00, while its family baths open 09:00–01:00 the following morning. The official English family-bath page lists family-bath reception until midnight (24:00); confirm your arrival time when booking. Temporary maintenance closures apply. Children, towels and tattoos

A family trip does not automatically call for a private bath. Hyotan says it provides baby bath chairs in the women’s communal shower area. Discuss whether your group is comfortable using separate communal areas or would prefer to help with the children in one private space.

Hyotan supplies combined shampoo and conditioner and body wash, but towels are not provided as standard. Its FAQ specifies payment in Japanese-yen cash and prohibits photography in bathrooms and changing rooms. Bring cash and a towel, and keep the camera packed away.

For tattoos, Beppu’s official English tourism guide lists Hyotan among communal onsen that welcome tattooed guests. That is a facility-specific basis for considering Hyotan. A private-bath label alone should not be treated as permission. The Furosen facility page checked for this guide does not state a tattoo policy; ask Furosen on 0977-21-0253 before visiting if that affects your choice.
