Start with the journeys you want to make

For Yufuin and Nagasaki by train, compare the Northern Kyushu JR Pass first. A Kurokawa stay with several other bus journeys makes Northern Kyushu SUNQ a useful starting point. Each pass covers different services. For one excursion, or a mixture of trains and buses, put individual tickets beside both passes before buying.

The JR pass covers Yufuin no Mori and eligible trains toward Nagasaki. It excludes buses, subways, other operators’ railways and the Hakata–Kokura Sanyo Shinkansen. The Kurokawa bus therefore stays outside your JR-pass budget. Northern SUNQ covers the Fukuoka buses to Yufuin, Kurokawa and Nagasaki; its transport coverage is buses and selected ferries, not trains.

The table gives you a place to start, not a promise that a particular pass is cheaper. Keep the nights and destinations you want, then price the transport. Use our Yufuin or Kurokawa guide to choose the stay, and the Nagasaki day-trip or overnight guide to decide how long to spend there.

Put travel days on the calendar

JR’s Northern Kyushu passes run for 3 or 5 consecutive days. SUNQ’s digital 2-day pass allows 2 days within 3 days from first use; its digital 3-day pass allows 3 days within 5 days. The paper SUNQ 3-day pass requires 3 consecutive days. Those rules were checked in September 2026.

For example, a bus out to an onsen on day 1, back on day 3 and a Nagasaki bus excursion on day 5 fit that digital 3-day pattern, provided each service is covered and seats are available. If the equivalent covered train journeys span days 1 to 5, compare a JR 5-day pass with individual tickets. Do not rearrange a comfortable stay just to use up a pass.

SUNQ counts a day from 03:00 to 02:59 the following morning. Digital access is through a smartphone ticket link sent with the purchase voucher. Prepare that link before boarding; a purchase confirmation and a reserved bus seat are separate things.

Reserve the transport before relying on the pass

Yufuin no Mori has only reserved seats. Check its operating calendar as well as availability: a pass does not guarantee that particular train or vehicle on your date. Northern JR pass holders can make up to 6 free ordinary reserved-seat bookings at JR Kyushu counters or reserved-seat machines in Kyushu. Paid advance booking is separate; a Design & Story sightseeing train such as Yufuin no Mori costs an additional JPY 1,500 per adult section through the pass booking service, and those paid bookings do not use the free allowance.

SUNQ users also need to reserve services that require booking and obtain the seat reservation ticket. For the bus departing Kurokawa, Sanko specifies 19:00 on the previous day as the reservation deadline. Apply that route-specific deadline, rather than SUNQ’s general last-minute booking guidance. Reserve the return before treating the ryokan journey as settled.

Do not read “Northern Kyushu” as permission to use every service in the region. SUNQ’s current exclusions include Fukuoka–Nagato/Hagi expressway buses and the overnight Fukuoka–Kagoshima service, despite older wording elsewhere. Compare the total you would actually pay

The official published digital SUNQ reference prices are JPY 8,000 for Northern Kyushu 2 days and JPY 10,000 for 3 days. These come from the operator’s price notice still linked on its current site; they are not live Klook quotes. JR’s direct online prices are JPY 14,000 for 3 days and JPY 16,000 for 5 days. Its published overseas-agency and local-counter prices are JPY 15,000 and JPY 17,000 respectively; a reseller’s currency total can differ.

For one adult at regular bus fares, Fukuoka–Yufuin return is 3,250 × 2 = JPY 6,500. That journey alone costs less than the SUNQ 2-day reference price. Tenjin–Kurokawa return is 4,000 × 2 = JPY 8,000, equal to that price before any other covered rides. These are fare calculations, not dated seat offers or comparisons with every discount. Count only the rides you already intend to take.

Write down three totals: individual tickets; JR pass plus uncovered transport and paid reservations; SUNQ plus trains and any other excluded travel. Calculate children’s fares separately: SUNQ has no discounted child pass, and paying the applicable child fares may cost less.
