Choose the food streets or the hill, then combine them if you have energy
For an easy Itaewon visit, start with a meal near Itaewon Station and decide about Haebangchon afterward. Choose the hillside extension if small cafés, residential lanes and a view of Namsan appeal to you. If stairs, heat or heavy luggage would spoil the afternoon, stay around the food streets or use transport to the upper neighbourhood.
Itaewon, Gyeongnidan-gil and Haebangchon are nearby, but they are not one continuous café strip. Haebangchon is a separate hillside neighbourhood in Yongsan, and a rooftop there is not the same experience as going up N Seoul Tower.
| Route | Best for | Leave it out when |
|---|---|---|
| Itaewon food streets and a short café stop | A meal-focused visit or a mixed-energy group | You mainly want city views |
| Noksapyeong to Haebangchon on foot | Comfortable walkers with light bags | Hills or repeated steps are a problem |
| Transport toward Haebangchon Ogeori, then a short upper-area walk | A rooftop or Sinheung Market is the main goal | You need a completely step-free route |
What the station distance means on a hill
Visit Seoul lists 1.2 km from Noksapyeong Station exit 2 to its Haebangchon Alleyway address at 90 Sinheung-ro. That is an approach to one address, not the full walk including Itaewon, every café and the stairs.
On 1 October 2026, we compared that stated distance at two assumed walking speeds. A 4 km/h pace gives 18 minutes, while a slower 3 km/h gives 24 minutes. Going up and back at those speeds means 36–48 minutes of movement before a meal, stops or exploring lanes. These are arithmetic scenarios, not measured hillside journey times; gradients, crossings and rests add time.

| Movement to the listed address | 4 km/h scenario | 3 km/h scenario |
|---|---|---|
| One-way, 1.2 km | 18 minutes | 24 minutes |
| There and back, 2.4 km | 36 minutes | 48 minutes |
For a two-hour visit, that leaves only 72–84 minutes before allowing for any delays. Choose one upper-area meal or café rather than trying several stops. The alternative in Seoul’s official Haebangchon feature is Yongsan02: from Noksapyeong exit 2, walk about five minutes to the Hanshin Apt. stop, then get off at Haebangchon Ogeori. Boarding, waiting and the final walk still need time, so this is an effort-saving option rather than a guaranteed faster route.
Three accounts that explain the appeal and the effort
In a trip report posted in 2026, StrikingCaregiver501 described returning to Haebangchon on Korea trips for the atmosphere, pizza and burgers. It is a food-and-neighbourhood recommendation, not a list of major landmarks.
Ashamed_Tell_1471, in a 2026 photo post, said they captured N Seoul Tower while walking through the area. A view can be part of the street walk, although a particular unobstructed café seat is never guaranteed by that photograph.
Japanese-language blogger q-bi described a March 2025 walk starting at Noksapyeong, taking a kebab break and later reaching the 108 Stairs. The writer found the hills demanding and left Sinheung Market for another visit. That last detail matters: a pleasant half-day does not have to include every named stop.
These accounts support a focused plan: a meal, a manageable part of the hill, and one place to sit. Treat the arithmetic distance comparison conservatively: the first-hand account makes clear that the slope, not just the distance, shapes the walk.
A food-first route with an optional upper stop
Start near Itaewon Station on Line 6. For World Food Street, look for the streets behind the main Itaewon-ro strip, around exits 1/2. Choose a restaurant by its actual menu and dietary information. International surroundings do not guarantee that every meal meets a particular halal, vegetarian or allergy requirement.

After eating, make the hill decision. If you choose Haebangchon, save 해방촌오거리 and 신흥시장 as your upper-area reference points. If you choose Gyeongnidan-gil instead, keep that as a separate browse rather than assuming it is a compulsory corridor through to every Haebangchon stop.
A café with a view is worth choosing for the seat and setting, not for a claim that an entire district has identical rooftops. Ask about terrace access, stairs, minimum order and available seats before ordering. Roofs may be unsuitable in rain or strong wind, and an indoor window seat can be a better choice than waiting for the photograph you had saved.

Avoid turning the end into another long walk
Return by the station or bus route that suits your actual endpoint. Do not automatically add a descent toward Seoul Station: that is a different extension and can lengthen an already hilly day. Traveling with a suitcase makes the short-looking lanes harder; collect it after this visit rather than bringing it uphill.
Residential alleys remain residential. Keep doorways clear, avoid photographing people through windows and use the marked public paths. A stair route is not automatically accessible because a nearby café looks convenient online. For anyone needing step-free access, ask the particular venue about its entrance and use a route that ends at that entrance.
If you plan to stay for drinks, choose your return transport before settling in. Street food, a restaurant and a bar may each have different closing times; there is no district-wide late-night timetable.
What can change before your trip
Check the chosen restaurant’s current menu, the café’s terrace rules and hours, rain or wind, and the return bus or subway service. Named businesses in old itineraries can close or move, so a saved address needs an actual shop page rather than a generic “Itaewon cafés” list.
For a first visit, a good meal and one hillside stop are enough. If the neighbourhood suits you, come back for a different lane or view. Leave before the walk turns into a series of tired detours.
