Seoul Winter Lights 2026–27: One Downtown Night or Namsan?

Seoul’s 2026 winter festival is confirmed for December 4, 2026 to January 31, 2027, across several city zones. That does not make every light show or market available for all 59 days. Build one downtown night only after the detailed program appears, and treat Namsan as a separate evening.

The current answer for winter 2026–27

Seoul Metropolitan Government lists the Hangang, Gwanghwamun Square, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul Plaza, Bosingak and DDP as 2026 Winter Festival locations. The citywide dates are firm in the current announcement; the source does not yet give one shared daily timetable for every venue. A useful plan therefore starts with a zone, then checks that zone’s date, hours, entry rules and weather notice on the day.

For a first night, choose Gwanghwamun Square → Cheonggyecheon → Jonggak. Those stops form one compact downtown line and give several subway exits if a child, cold or crowds shorten the walk. DDP is another district. Do not append it merely because it appears under the same festival name.

Reserve two hours, then add a cold-weather buffer

Planning calculation, checked October 20, 2026: allow 20 minutes to reach the correct square exit and orient, 40 minutes for one Gwanghwamun program, 45 minutes for the stream walk, and 15 minutes to reach Jonggak or an indoor stop. That is 120 minutes. Add 30 minutes when travelling with children, waiting for a scheduled projection, or visiting on a busy weekend. This is an editorial allowance, not an official festival duration.

Three completed visits explain the limit. Min young’s December 2025 evening with a child kept only Gwanghwamun, Cheonggyecheon and Jonggak and took about two hours; a previous attempt had ended early because the family became cold and tired. CY’s December 2024 visit dropped Dongdaemun after roughly 18,000 steps and found Gwanghwamun crowded even on a Tuesday. Kim Hwa-yong’s opening-night report records an actual Gwanghwamun visit rather than a future itinerary. These are past visits, so use their pacing lesson without copying their event dates.

Put N Seoul Tower on a different night

The current tower listing gives weekday hours of 10:00–22:30 and weekend or holiday hours of 10:00–23:00. The official admission page lists the observatory at KRW 29,000 for adults and KRW 23,000 for children aged 3–12 and seniors; one child under 36 months per guardian enters without a ticket. Hours and prices can change, so reopen the operator page before payment.

The official access page lists the Namsan Cable Car at 10:00–23:00, with a KRW 15,000 adult round trip and KRW 11,500 child round trip. It also warns that hours can change with weather and operations. The walk from Myeong-dong Station Exit 3 to the boarding area is described as about 10–15 minutes; that is the approach to the cable car, not the whole tower visit.

Combining Namsan with the downtown festival creates two queues, an uphill transfer and a weather dependency. If the tower matters more, make it the anchor and skip the stream. If the festival matters more, stay downtown and use an indoor cafe or station as the warm-up stop.

Decide before leaving the hotel

• Check the exact 2026 program for one zone; the citywide date range does not prove every sub-event is running.
• Save both the entrance and exit subway stations for the downtown route.
• Set a cold cutoff: if hands stay cold after the first indoor warm-up, end the outdoor route.
• For Namsan, recheck tower and cable-car hours, weather and last admission separately.
