Okinawa Rental Car Guide: licences, insurance and a five-day route

Rent for the north, use rail for central Naha

For a four-night Okinawa Main Island trip, a car earns its cost on the northern multi-stop day. It is less useful while the plan stays around Kokusai-dori and Shuri. A practical split is to collect the car after arrival, use it for two full days, then return it before the final Naha day if the quote and office hours allow.

A completed 14-day trip report warned that 100 km could take about two hours on Okinawa’s roads and said the travelers underestimated travel time. A completed three-day road trip described the off-airport shuttle and required driving documents as part of the rental segment. Build those transfers into the schedule instead of treating the booking time as the moment the car leaves.

Driving documents depend on where the licence was issued

Japan’s National Police Agency separates the accepted routes. Check the current NPA list and the rental company before payment.

Do not use a universal checklist that tells a Taiwan licence holder to obtain an IDP. Taiwan follows the original-licence-plus-Japanese-translation route. An unofficial translation or a document issued under the wrong convention can be refused. The rental company may ask to see the same originals before releasing the car.

Compare insurance with one written protocol

Rental-company product names are not interchangeable. On the quote and terms page, record answers to these questions:

1. What deductible remains for vehicle damage and property damage?
2. Is the non-operation charge, or NOC, included, waived by an add-on, or still payable?
3. Are towing and roadside assistance included, and to what limit?
4. How are tyres, wheels, glass, keys and underbody damage treated?
5. Are single-vehicle accidents covered differently?
6. Which actions void coverage, such as an unregistered driver, late accident report, prohibited road or drink driving?

Toyota Rent a Car’s official guide is one example of why the rows must be read separately: insurance, deductible-related protection and NOC protection are described as distinct parts of the rental. Use the terms for the actual company and branch in the booking. This article does not assign one NOC amount or promise “zero out of pocket” across companies.

To line up several companies at once, Klook’s Okinawa car rental search asks for the pick-up and drop-off place and time, the country where your licence was issued and the driver’s age, and lists cars from suppliers such as Times, ORIX, Nippon Rent A Car and Toyota. Open each offer’s insurance and cancellation terms and answer the six questions above before you pay.

Photograph every side of the vehicle, wheels, windscreen, fuel gauge and odometer at pickup. Make sure every intended driver is registered. If an incident occurs, contact police and the rental company using the process in the agreement even when the damage looks small.

Churaumi day with a cutoff

Leave Naha around 08:00 and make Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium the fixed northern stop. The official information checked on October 20, 2026 lists general admission at ¥2,180 for adults, ¥1,440 for high-school students and ¥710 for elementary and junior-high students; children under six enter free. Recheck hours and closure notices for the visit date.

Klook also sells a Churaumi e-ticket. On 26 October it was valid for 30 days and could not be cancelled, so buy it once the northern day is fixed.

After the aquarium, add Kouri only if the navigation estimate still protects the hotel check-in or return time. A completed car-free trip used separate bus tours for Churaumi/Cape Manzamo and for Kouri, and reported that the Kouri stop was too short for every viewpoint. That is useful evidence that “the north” is not one compact attraction cluster, even when someone else drives.

Do not stack Churaumi, Kouri, Cape Manzamo and a fixed Naha dinner without a cutoff. Cape Manzamo fits better on the central-coast day. If rain or fatigue consumes the buffer, drop the optional island stop first.

Shurijo rules after November 23, 2026

The restored Seiden interior opens to the public on November 23, 2026. The official guide separates individual tickets from group procedures:

• Individuals: to enter the Seiden interior, buy an admission ticket with a designated date and time. Sales are first-come, first-served. If space remains, it can be bought online or at the ticket office up to 15 minutes before the slot. A paid-area ticket without Seiden interior access does not require that interior reservation.
• Groups of 10 or more: separate group procedures apply. Interior visits use lottery schedules, and group reservations are not accepted for the initial November 23–December 6 period, though same-day guidance may be possible if capacity remains. Bus parking has its own reservation process.

From November 23, the official individual admission table lists ¥1,000 adult, ¥760 high school and ¥370 elementary/junior high, with children under six free. The official estimate is about 90–120 minutes from Suimuikan through the visit, depending on congestion. Do not copy the group lottery windows into an individual itinerary.

Pickup-day checklist

• Match the licence route to the issuing jurisdiction; Taiwan uses the authorised-translation route.
• Bring every original document and register every driver.
• Save the insurance, deductible, NOC and roadside terms for the booked product.
• Inspect and photograph the car before departure.
• Put Churaumi and the return cutoff into navigation before adding Kouri.
• Reserve Shurijo Seiden interior access only under the correct individual or group process.
