Seoraksan Autumn Day Trip: Cable Car, Shuttles, and Beating the Crowds

In foliage season, a Seoraksan day trip comes down to one question: how early can you get the cable car? The Seoraksan Cable Car (설악산 케이블카) depends on the weather, so it takes no online advance reservations and sells tickets on-site on the day of travel only; an early arrival is the de facto reservation for the day. The parking lot regularly fills before 9 a.m. in peak season, so plan to arrive before 8 a.m.; if that slips, the fallback is the Sokcho public parking lot plus a city bus.

The whole day hangs on Sogongwon

Sogongwon (설악산소공원, the park entrance area of Seoraksan National Park) is the pivot of the day trip. From Sogongwon you can reach three places on foot: the national park trails, Sinheungsa Temple (신흥사), and the Seoraksan Cable Car. Park entry is free as of 2026. The park service lists the foliage peak for the Ulsanbawi course as mid-October through early November and recommends that course as the best foliage viewing in Seoraksan, so if foliage is the goal, the natural move is to pick your day inside that window. From downtown Sokcho, the drive is about 20 minutes.

Assembling the day is simple. Arrive early in the morning and buy the cable car ticket first, spend the wait on a stroll to Sinheungsa, then ride up to Gwongeumseong Fortress (권금성); a roughly 10-minute walk toward Bonghwadae (봉화대) from the top station takes you to the viewpoint. Ridge-length hikes to Daecheongbong (대청봉) are a different problem that changes how a whole day is budgeted, so they stay outside this guide. Trails are controlled after sunset, so set a descent time with room to spare.

The cable car takes no reservations

Because the ride can stop the moment the weather turns, no online advance reservations are accepted at all; tickets are issued on the day only, at the first-floor ticket office. In strong wind, rain, or fog the ride can stop without advance notice, and the operator asks visitors to check real-time operation information before departure. Operating hours are 09:00 to 17:30 on weekdays and 08:30 on weekends and holidays, extended to 18:00 in peak season; they are not identical every day, so the first step is checking the previous day on the official website (sorakcablecar.co.kr) for that day’s operation status.

The 2026 fares, round trip, are as follows.

The peak season with no discounts runs July 18 to August 23 and September 19 to November 15 this year, and foliage-season weekends sit entirely inside that span. The senior discount also applies only outside peak season, so the honest way to price a foliage-season ticket is the regular fare. No one-way tickets exist; only round-trip tickets are sold, and one cabin carries up to 50 riders. The ride itself takes about 10 minutes, and Gwongeumseong at the top sits 699 m above sea level.

Ticketing is short as well. Enter Sogongwon, walk 5 minutes to the first-floor ticket office, pay by cash or card, and move up to the second-floor platform 5 minutes before boarding.

The real cost is the wait. In summer peak season and the autumn foliage stretch (October–November), a 1–2 hour wait is normal, and in peak season ticket sales can close early. The open run, arriving as the ticket office opens to shrink the wait, is the realistic answer in foliage season. Refund rules: a full refund until 10 minutes before boarding, a 20% reduction after that, and unused tickets are refunded in full when weather stops the ride.

Parking is won before 8 a.m.

Sogongwon parking charges KRW 6,000 for passenger cars (compact and mid-size), billed separately from the cable car fare. The lot is roomy, but on weekends and in foliage season the jam starts at the entrance with queues to get in, and on weekends it is often full by 9 a.m. Peak-season lots already fill before 9 a.m. often, so treat that as the benchmark; that puts the arrival target before 8 a.m. There is also the observed case of losing the cable car line to a parking queue, so parking and ticketing need to be planned as one thing.

If the lot fills, the answer is fixed: park at the Sokcho public parking lot (속초시 공영주차장) and continue on foot or by bus. City buses 7 and 7-1 pass both terminals and end at the Seoraksan parking lot; the first bus leaves at 06:30, the last bus from Seoraksan at 20:35, and buses run roughly every 17–20 minutes.

Shuttle buses have a precedent too. On October 2025 weekends, cars were parked at the B and C district lots (B·C지구 주차장) and a free shuttle ran flexibly to Sogongwon. Whether the same service operates this foliage season has to be read from announcements before departure, so keep the bus plus public parking combination in reserve for days without a shuttle.

Rain and fog: how far to cut the day back

The cable car can stop immediately in strong wind, fog, or rain, and there may be no advance notice. When it stops, unused tickets are refunded in full, so the itinerary design is the problem rather than the money. When the weather turns gray, it pays to split the day into two layers. One guide advises setting down a substitute walk and a return time in advance for weather stoppages, and Sinheungsa, inside Sogongwon’s walking range, is the natural substitute route.

Walking beyond that comes with conditions. Guidance says to avoid exposed ridges when strong wind and rain hit and switch to forest paths, and after rain the valley’s water volume can surge, so a valley path starts with reading the water. The gentle, well-built Biryong Falls course (비룡폭포 코스) belongs to the beginner-friendly end, yet it is the same valley, and the after-rain conditions are the same. Trails are controlled after sunset, so end the descent earlier on shorter days.
