How far your parents can walk without overdoing it

Walks within reach of Sogongwon (설악산 소공원) come in three characters. The Sinheungsa direction stays an easy walking path as far as Heundeulbawi Rock, and only the summit section of Ulsanbawi (울산바위) waits at the end with steep steel stairs. With your parents, set the target at Heundeulbawi and save the steel stairs for a day when energy is left over; that is the safer scope.

The Biryong Falls direction is listed in beginner-oriented guides as a gentle, well-maintained trail, and the first 1.2 km of the course is passable by wheelchair. Past Biryong Falls, though, the climb toward the Towangseong Falls viewpoint (토왕성폭포 전망대) is where the stairs get serious, so decide in advance where you will turn back, before the stairs, and the load drops sharply. Biseondae (비선대) is classified in the material as a beginner-and-family round trip, but a wheelchair can go only as far as the first third of the nature observation trail, and beyond that point it is not possible.

Facilities are better prepared than you might expect. The Sogongwon, cable car, and Sinheungsa sections are designated as accessible tourism zones, marked with wheelchair rental, an accessible ticket office, designated disabled parking spaces, and disabled toilets, and you can also rent a wheelchair at Sogongwon. Entry to the national park is free.

Cable car or Biseondae: which one to pick

The cable car lifts you up without the walking, and families rate it highly as a course. The conditions deserve a close look, though: there is no online reservation, and tickets are sold at the onsite ticket office on the day only; one-way tickets do not exist, so only round-trip tickets are sold. Fares are 16,000 KRW round trip for adults, 12,000 KRW for children, and infants ride free, as checked in September 2026. One source notes that the senior discount is not applied in peak season, so skip any budget that assumes the discount.

The wait is the biggest variable. One notice says the wait in foliage season can stretch past one hour, which is why a morning visit is recommended; another account has lines forming from the morning through foliage season, public holidays, and weekends. The material also offers a way to use that wait: buy the tickets early and spend the time on an autumn stroll around Sinheungsa. Operation is sensitive to weather and stops often in strong wind; when it stops, unused tickets are refunded in full. The cabin has no air conditioning or heating, so a jacket has to cover the cool air up the mountain on an autumn morning. Once you are up at Gwongeumseong, the walk includes some stairs and slopes, so give the viewing loop generous time at your parents’ pace.

Biseondae is a round trip that follows the valley. It steps in as the alternative when weather stops the cable car, but with your parents, whether the round-trip walk itself suits them is the first question. If seeing the view from up high in one go matters most, take the cable car; if a long, gentle walk fits better, take the early Biryong Falls stretch or the Sinheungsa stroll.

Parking, ticketing, and facilities, in this order

One record has the Sogongwon lot filling before dawn in foliage season, and another notice has it full before 9 a.m. in peak season (checked September 2026). Sources agree that the park is very crowded every weekend, and the official guidance likewise advises planning ahead for weekends, public holidays, and the foliage season. If you drive, arriving early is the baseline, and when the lots fill, the Seorak-dong lot and the C-district lot are the recommended alternatives. By public transport, city buses 7 and 7-1 from Jangsadong run through both terminals to the Seoraksan parking lot terminus; the first bus leaves at 06:30, the last from Seoraksan at 20:35, and buses run roughly every 17 to 20 minutes.

Ticketing is the part that needs a family strategy. Separate the arrival time from the time the tickets are secured, and put the walk to the ticket office inside the schedule, because the heritage-area entrance, Sogongwon, the cable car building, and the ticket office are not the same spot. The on-site arrangement in the material: one person who has sorted the family headcount and age brackets buys the tickets, and the others wait somewhere that does not block the parents’ path. If the boarding rounds split the group, do not send part of the family up first; confirm the downhill ride and the regrouping work, then decide. Seoraksan is usually credited as the first place in South Korea where the foliage turns, and the park service lists it as a prime place to see the leaves. The park service sets the best color window for the Ulsanbawi course between mid-October and early November, and the peak-season period, drawn for camping fees, marks the same stretch: October 1 to November 15. Choosing a day inside that window comes down to this: skip weekends and public holidays when you can, and if the weekend is the only day you have, put the weight on arriving early in the morning and getting the tickets done first.

Once the day is fixed, the day before has two tasks: check the park service’s closure information and the weather service’s mountain forecast, and check the cable car’s operating notice on the official website. Trails can close during fire-prevention periods and similar stretches, and checking closure status and weather on the national park website before the hike is the baseline guidance.

That is the whole preparation. Keep the course to cable car + Gwongeumseong plus the Sinheungsa stroll, and extend it only up to where the stairs begin. For timing, look first at a weekday morning between mid-October and early November. For packing the day, three tasks finish it: choosing the one ticket buyer, arriving early against full lots, and checking closures and weather the day before.
