Seoraksan Autumn Foliage: Timing and 10 Places to Compare

There is no official 2026 foliage forecast to turn into a fixed travel date as of September 22, 2026. The Korea Meteorological Administration recorded Seoraksan’s first foliage on October 2 and its peak on October 24 in 2025; the long-term reference dates are September 28 and October 17. Use those dates as reference points only, then check the latest forecast and Seoraksan National Park notices before departure.

The ten places below are comparison choices, not a verified ranking. They range from a cable-car viewpoint and lowland walks to full-day summits and overnight ridge routes. The park publishes distances and times from each trailhead to the destination. Where a round trip is shown, it is a simple double of the one-way figure, before adding breaks, queues or controls.

Use the foliage dates as a reference, not a promise

The KMA defines first foliage as roughly 20 percent of a mountain showing color and peak foliage as roughly 80 percent. In an average year, Seoraksan’s peak follows first foliage by about 20 days. The 2025 dates were later than those reference dates, which is why a 2026 itinerary should keep the dates provisional and use the latest KMA forecast and park control notices as the final check.

The cable car requires same-day tickets and route planning

Seorak Cable Car sells round-trip tickets only. The ride from Sogongwon Park takes about 5 minutes, covers 1,128 m and reaches a station at 699 m above sea level. Advance reservations are not accepted; buy at the on-site ticket office on the day. Operating times depend on the season and weather and are posted on the official site, so check the day’s service and first departure before setting your route.

The standard fare is KRW 16,000 for adults and KRW 12,000 for children from 37 months through elementary school; children 36 months and younger are free. The non-discount period in the 2026 autumn notice runs from September 19 through November 15. Disability, national merit and Sokcho resident discounts remain available year-round under the operator’s conditions, while the senior discount is excluded during that period; proof is required and discounts cannot be combined.

If wind or other weather stops the service, unused tickets are refunded in full. The operator also lists a full refund up to 10 minutes before boarding and a refund after that point with a 20 percent deduction. Waiting time is not a stable number, so use the day’s operating notice and the actual queue rather than promising a typical peak-season wait.

Match the walking route to the published direction

Seoraksan Ulsanbawi Rock (Ulsanbawi) is listed as 3.8 km and 2 hours from Sogongwon Park to the destination. A simple return calculation is about 7.6 km and 4 hours, before rest and crowd delays. Treat the afternoon entry cutoffs and sunset restrictions as part of the route decision rather than starting late because the foliage looks good.

The Biryongpokpo Falls (Biryong Falls) course reaches the Towangseong Falls Observatory (Towangseongpokpo) after 2.8 km and 1 hour 30 minutes one way. Doubling the one-way distance and time gives about 5.6 km and 3 hours return, but the last stairs, weather and controls can change the real day.

The park course list checked for this guide does not give a separate Biseondae distance. The full Sogongwon–Waseondae–Biseondae–Geumganggul Cave route is 3.6 km and 2 hours one way; that figure is for the full route, not a Biseondae round trip. The Yangpok Shelter route through Cheonbuldong Valley is 6.5 km and 3 hours 10 minutes one way from Sogongwon Park to Yangpok Shelter.

For a summit day, the Osaek–Daecheongbong Peak course is 5 km and 4 hours one way, or about 10 km and 8 hours by simple return calculation. The Hangyeryeong route and the Gongnyongneungseon Ridge (Dinosaur Ridge) route are full overnight routes in the park’s course information; plan shelter, descent and current controls before treating them as options.

Reservations, entry times and weather controls

Heullimgol is a separate reservation route. For the autumn period, the 2026 notice lists reservations from October 1 through November 30; June 24 through September 30 and December 1 through December 31 are listed as non-reservation periods.

The official guide gives 3.1 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes one way and a daily capacity of 5,000. Online reservations are the main channel, with remaining places handled on site.

October hours are 08:00–15:00 and November hours are 09:00–14:00. Reservations close at 14:00 the previous day.

Osaek Village parking is the stated option, and roadside parking on National Route 44 is prohibited.

Gombaeryeong is also separate: the park guide lists 3.7 km one way from Jeombongsan Branch to Gombaeryeong and about 4 hours roundtrip. It has a daily limit of 350 people, operating hours of 09:00–14:00 and an 11:00 entry cutoff.

It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and during wildfire-prevention periods. Reservations are available online and on site, while the Gangseon Village descent requires a separate Korea Forest Service reservation. Check the operating day and remaining places on the live notice before going.

Shelter stays are handled through the national park reservation system. Socheong, Suryumdong, Yangpok and Huiungak Shelter (희운각대피소) appear in the system, but how you book and whether seats remain depends on the booking period, so follow the live reservation screen rather than describing every shelter as first come.

The current entry-time notice gives separate windows by route. From April through October, Biseondae Peak toward Yangpok is 03:00–14:00, toward Madeungnyeong 03:00–11:00, and toward Geumganggul Cave 03:00–14:00. Osaek toward Daecheongbong Peak is 03:00–12:00; November through March is 04:00–11:00. Hangyeryeong toward Hangyeryeong Samgeori is 03:00–12:00 from April through October and 04:00–10:00 from November through March. Sogongwon Park routes to Ulsanbawi Rock, Towangseong Falls, Biseondae Peak and Gwongeumseong Fortress are restricted after sunset until two hours before the next sunrise. Field controls take priority over this summary.

The park office describes the regular Gongnyongneungseon Ridge (Dinosaur Ridge) wildfire-control periods as March 2–May 15 and November 15–December 15, with possible date adjustments and temporary controls for weather or trail work. Do not switch from a closed ridge to a valley route on your own during severe weather. Stop, descend safely and choose only a route the park office lists as open. If the cable car stops, follow the operator’s refund and reopening notice instead of treating a mountain walk as an automatic substitute.

Parking and buses for a foliage day

The cable-car operator does not run a dedicated car park. Its guide points visitors to the paid Sinheungsa parking area and gives 033-636-4050 for parking questions; the operator does not publish one fixed parking fee on its own page.

The operator lists Seoul–Sokcho travel at about 2 hours 30 minutes by express bus and about 2 hours 10 minutes by intercity bus. In Sokcho, buses 7 and 7-1 run to the Seoraksan terminus. The posted timetable shows a first departure from Jangsadong at 06:30 and a last departure from Seoraksan at 20:35; some 7-1 services carry separate weekend, holiday or school-break notes. The general fare is KRW 1,700 in cash or KRW 1,530 by transport card. Check the timetable for the day you board.

Before leaving, check the KMA foliage update, park controls and route entry window; cable-car operation and refund rules; Heullimgol and Gombaeryeong reservations; and shelter availability. Bring footwear, water and food suited to the route, and do not continue a ridge walk into a severe-weather warning. The 2026 forecast remained unconfirmed on September 22, 2026.
