Shirakawa-go and Takayama: 2027 Light-Up bus guide

The 2027 Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up runs on four nights only: 11, 17, 24 and 31 January, from 17:30 to 19:30. Entry is reservation-only. Arriving in the village without an eligible booking does not get you into the event.

For a Takayama base, Nohi Bus sells three different round-trip tours. The cheapest is not the observation-deck tour, so choose by access rather than by the word “Light-Up.”

Compare the three official Nohi Bus courses

The bath ticket is primarily for use from the following day. The operator gives a separate local-bus instruction for anyone trying to bathe on the tour day. Do not buy that course expecting an evening bath to be built into the Light-Up stop.

The observation-deck decision

Only the JPY 16,000 course includes deck admission. Nohi Bus says the climb takes about 20 minutes uphill, and the route can be slippery under snow. The return is also on foot. A limited shuttle may be available through the tourist association for guests with walking difficulty, but it should be arranged through the association rather than assumed at the bus.

Three completed-trip accounts support the same practical reading. Danny With Love describes trekking up for the wide village view. The Flashpacker treats a winter visit as a half-day outing from Takayama and stresses snow-ready planning. A Reddit traveler who linked Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa used an early reserved bus and found the through-route more efficient than backtracking. These experiences do not replace the 2027 rules; they explain why footwear, a reserved seat and the direction of onward travel matter.

If the panoramic photograph is essential and everyone can manage the snowy climb, choose the observation-deck course. If you want more time among the houses, choose Minkaen. The JPY 14,000 course makes sense when you will actually use the bath ticket later.

Booking dates and rules

Sales open online at 14:00 Japan time in four stages:

Bookings are website-only, limited to six people in one reservation, and require advance card payment. No changes are allowed after payment. A JPY 100 refund-processing fee applies to cancellations before departure; cancellations after departure are not accepted.

Exchange the online ticket at the Takayama Nohi Bus Center counter before boarding. Reception opens at 07:00 on the travel day, and the operator recommends exchanging early because the counter can be crowded. You cannot board or leave at an intermediate stop, and the ticket cannot be used for only one direction.

There is no regular fixed-route bus back to Takayama after the Light-Up. A daytime bus ticket does not solve the return journey. This is why the round-trip event course is the practical default for a Takayama stay.

Build Takayama around the event

Stay in Takayama the night before and after the event if possible. Use the morning for the old town and Miyagawa Morning Market, keep lunch unhurried, then return to the bus centre with enough time for ticket exchange and winter delays.

A simple event-day plan is:

• Morning: Miyagawa Market and the old town.
• By 14:30: collect bags, add a warm layer and reach the bus centre.
• 14:40–15:40: departure, depending on course.
• 17:30–19:30: official Light-Up window.
• 20:20 or 20:45: scheduled return to Takayama.

Heavy snow and road traffic can delay arrival and shorten the village stay. Wear insulated, non-slip footwear and keep hands free for balance. The official event may be cancelled if severe cold is expected to disrupt transport nationwide.

Private-car and tour-bus parking use separate reservation systems and conditions. The tourist association explicitly says Light-Up tour-bus parking is not booked through the general bus-parking site and is not first-come, first-served. Do not reuse ordinary daytime parking advice for the event.

The purchase decision is narrow: JPY 13,000 for village and Minkaen, JPY 16,000 for the snowy deck climb, or JPY 14,000 when the later bath ticket is useful. Secure the return transport first; everything else in Takayama can be arranged around that fixed seat.
