For a family that wants to bathe together in privacy, book the bath arrangement before choosing a ryokan from its open-air-bath photographs. A bath attached to your booked room, a hotel private bath with property-specific access rules, and a day-use family bath have different access rules and costs. If you expect to bathe repeatedly around a child’s routine, prioritize a room with its own bath. If you need only one private session, Beppu accommodation plus a separate booking at Hyotan Onsen gives more room choice.

Hyotan Onsen is a bath booking, not a ryokan room
Hyotan Onsen in Beppu offers family baths as a day-use option. The official September 2026 basic prices are ¥2,400 for 60 minutes, ¥3,000 for 75 minutes and ¥3,600 for 90 minutes. The basic charge covers three adults; additional guests aged 13 or above cost ¥700, additional children aged 4–12 cost ¥300 and ages three or below are free. That is a bath price, separate from your hotel and from the Beppu Hells sightseeing ticket.
All family baths require advance reservation by phone. Booking opens one week before the date on +81-977-67-3010. Fix the bath time before building the day’s timetable. Hyotan Onsen has announced shorter hours, 9:00–16:00, for 5 October 2026 and a temporary closure on 9 October.
Beppu hotels with a separate private-bath option
Suginoi Hotel’s panoramic Tanayu public bath is separate from its Oita Goto private rental baths. The operator lists five private rooms and accepts day users. Reservations open only from 9:00 on the day of use. A standard 60-minute room is ¥4,100 on weekdays or ¥5,100 on weekends and designated dates; 10–12 October 2026 are designated dates. Do not infer private access from a photo of the shared panorama bath.
Onyado Nono Beppu, about a minute’s walk from Beppu Station, lists seven private rental baths: two indoor and five open-air. Check how the baths operate and the capacity of your selected guestroom separately. A January 2025 stay account reports using an empty bath without advance booking then; confirm the current system with the hotel. This makes a station-centred stay a different choice from a resort day focused on its bath facilities. At the official base prices checked on 28 September 2026, 60 minutes at Hyotan starts at ¥2,400; Suginoi’s standard private room is ¥4,100 on a weekday or ¥5,100 on a weekend, gaps of ¥1,700 and ¥2,700. These are different products’ advertised base charges, not matched totals for a family of four.
What three firsthand visits and stays reveal
Yomuin no A visited Hyotan around June 2024 and collected a key and basket with a hair dryer at reception before using a wooden family bath. In a Nono Beppu account posted in January 2025, tonogata found a free private bath late at night during a winter stay, but saw that the baths could be nearly full at other times. The writer said no advance reservation was needed at the time. A September 2024 stay at Tanokura describes an open-air bath attached to a two-room guestroom and used again at night; that writer was travelling as a couple. Tanokura’s current room list says its first-floor, two-room Japanese suite with an open-air bath (10 + 8 tatami mats) accepts children, while its first-floor one-room type (10 mats plus entry space) does not. These older experiences explain the difference between a day-use family bath, a hotel’s shared rental baths and a room-specific bath. How to read a Yufuin ryokan listing
When a Yufuin ryokan mentions a private onsen, find out whether it is inside your selected room or shared across guests by reservation. Check who can use it, whether a time slot can be secured before arrival and whether the room itself holds all family members. A child may stay without an extra bed at some properties but still incur meal or bedding charges; use the actual room plan rather than an onsen label to price the stay.
A large public rooftop bath can be the highlight of a family hotel without offering private bathing. Treat photos of a panoramic shared bath as a reason to consider the property, then check the exact room and private-bath inventory. A panoramic public bath and a room bath solve different needs; check the inventory for the exact room you will reserve.
